It is time to give an update about the BMW e46 Digital Gauge Cluster project. The whole team worked hard, and we made some significant progress.

ID4Motion E46 Digital Gauge Cluster

To start, the hardware.

With the hardware, everything is finalized, with some minor details to be solved. The final order from the metal housing will arrive this week and is made 5 KM from our shop. The injection mold for the cover is finished, and the first batch will arrive in the paint shop shortly. We have the correct E46 connectors that will plug into the wiring harness. For this project, we will use our in-house PCB designs and the same automotive display we use in the E90, true and tested on 500+ BMWs right now.

K-Line to RXTX, is the only thing we have to decide. We have to intergrade a K-Line adapter to the Digital Cluster input to convert it to something the gauges can understand. The preferred way is to do this is directly in the wiring harness. (If someone has any good tips?....)

The install.

The installation is a thigh fit (watch out not to scratch your dashboard with the corners of the cluster.) But it will fit without cutting any part of your dashboard.

We will use the already exciting mounting points for the installation from the cluster. The two bolts will go true the cover and display bracket, with some extra room for adjustments. The bolts will secure the whole unit, with the lower part of the cluster fitting snug to the bottom of the dashboard.

We are working out the signals.

We are making great strides in decoding all the signals necessary.

Because they're a lot of different variations of the E46, we can't measure everything on our test vehicle, so we need to borrow some models to complete the list.
If we are missing essential pieces, please let us know.

Features
Image

The E46 will keep every functionality the original gauge cluster has, including all the tell-tales it can show. But also new extra's

BMW E46 Backup camera

You will be able to add a backup camera to the cluster for a complete view of your surroundings.

BMW E46 G-Force sensor

A G-Force sensor is implemented for braking, accelerating, or taking hard corners.

BMW E46 Cluster Night mode

We implemented a Night mode to be more visible to read in the dark.

BMW E46 Digital Cluster Settings

And many more settings to change, like the appearance.

BMW E46 Design aqua
BMW E46 Design Red
BMW E46 Design Neon
BMW E46 Design White
BMW E46 Design Green

The Timeline

1. Starting January 2022, our test vehicles will drive around with the cluster and give it a shake-down.

2. Early on in February, we will invite 20 test drivers to be the first ones to drive around with it. Testing will be for a reduced price incl. All the features, in trade of feedback.
(Applications will start on the last week of January)

3. If the 20 test drivers are booked, we will take on preorders (Delivery will be after the major bugs are solved)

Progress on the E46 Digital Cluster
The E46 Digital Gauge Project is coming along great. We have made some significant steps regarding implementing the K-Line. And out of the hundreds of skin designs, we picked the ones that suit the BMW E46 the best.

Take a look: The first test drive in the ID4Motion E46 BMW around the block. (Not a finished product)

Beta Testers
This Digital Gauge Cluster will need to work on every different model 3 Series E46, no matter which chassis type: Coupé, convertible, compact, sedan, touring. Or engine and gearbox combination: (See list here).

Therefore we are looking for different testers worldwide to make sure every combination of BMW Spec will work with our Digital Gauge Cluster. Are you interested in testing, and can you give valuable feedback? Please fill in this form: Click here.

Pricing
The pricing will be around the same as our E90 Digital Gauge Cluster. This will be 3 versions:
  • The Basic Edition, an entry-level cluster. The basic features you will need and 4 different skins.
  • The Standard Edition, a cluster that will surprise you. All the extra features we implement and 6 different skins.
  • The Premium Edition, a cluster with everything you want. All the extra features we implement and all the available E46 skins
We have chosen these three versions to give an as low as possible entry to our digital gauge cluster, with an option to update with skins or features later on. This will allow us to keep up the development for new Skins and Features later down the line.

Hello, I'm located in the United States of America and I would love to be a beta tester and give you guys good feedback and a great review. Please consider me as one of your beta tester.
Thank you for the great work you guys have done with this cluster, it looks awesome, I love it!!!

Hi there,
I’m in interested in being a BETA tester for this product. I own a 2005 e46 M3 that recently had an SMG to manual conversion done. I am located just outside of Seattle Washington and would love to be a tester and provide feedback on the product in hopes of improving the cluster while in beta before the final product is released. Feel free to reach out to me in order to start testing!

Hello there. I own two e46s, a 2000 323ci converible and a 2004 330i zhp. I'd love to be able to beta test one of your products for you, I think that what you're doing is awesome. It'll add the perfect touch up to my cars. Thank you. I'm located in Jacksonville FL.

Looks fantastic.

a few ideas:
1. Show “hidden menu” options like left and right fuel levels, battery voltage, etc
2. Have a button to read OBD codes (and airbag) and potentially reset
3. Show fuel trims (toggle)
4. Show true engine temp (not “normalized” like IKE)
5. I still like the idea of time series graphs like g-forces (lateral and acceleration)
6. Bluetooth LE OBD port adapter

Are you doing anything with the terrible piezo buzzer that is in the IKE for door open and key in? Would be nice to get a mellower sound.

Hidden menu data:
Are you sure there isn't anything else? Lol

Hey! I'm interested in being a Beta tester. I'm based in Malaysia and the market here for E46's are fantastic! I've just bought a 2000's 330ci at $15.5k with approximately 118k miles and am in the midst of rebuilding it. Hope you're able to consider. Will be able to introduce them in my market too 😊.

I'm not here often. Actually just registered as a member to respond this thread I found from Facebook's E46 Owner's group. You'll be able to reach me via email at adamleemh@gmail.com if you're keen.
