How to get into ECU remapping?

Hey there,

maybe I just oversaw it or didn't use the search function right. But can someone please help me getting into ECU mapping? I saw tons of tools for almost every engine out there, but here I come with my 2001 E46, the 1.9l 316i (105hp) engine and the BMS46 ECU and have no idea where to start.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to tune my car into a horsepower machine or anything, I just want to know what and how out of pure curiosity. So basically, what tools and software do I need to partially read my ECU and theoretically remap it? I read about WinOLS, but that is kinda out of my price range. I already have an K + DCAN cable and was able to recode and read errors in my car.

But what now? Any help will be appreciated.

Check the pinned threads at the top of the tuning forum.
Then search and read read read!

Yeah thanks, I already checked all of these out. But it didn't really help me with my specific ECU.
How can I even "pull" the old ECU file? I read about BMWFlash but the BMS46 ECU isn't listed under the supported ECU's. So what other tools are there? And then for editing I read about WinOLS, but I need some kind of damon file? So the alternative would be TunerPro but I need an XDF file for my ECU.

So yeah, will still have to figure this one out.
