P0130, O2 sensor circuit malfunction.

hello, i was wondering if anyone had gotten this code before. i never had any problems with my bmw, but just recently i had decided to try a fuel system cleaner since i have never used one before. Reading a couple forums i decided that redline fuel cleaner was the one. Well, a quarter into the tank i had the service engine soon light come on. So, i drove to the local autozone and checked it out myself. The fault code P0130 had shown up. since this was a 02 sensor circuit malfunction. i figured that it might just be a circult error that just malfunctioned today and maybe it was just a rare occassion. anyhow i was wondering if anyone else had gotten this code after they had used redline fuel cleaner and if this is a major issue that i should address.

I just also want to add a review of the product. I feel that redline fuel cleaner is very harsh on our cars. Maybe because our cars hold only 15 gallons of fuel and supposely you need to mix the redline product with 20 gallons. anyhow ever since i poured it in i get a ticking noise coming from inbetween the intake maniford and the head. i did feel worried, but after doing some research, most of the members of e46.com had said that it was normal. well i still felt that something was somehow wrong because it sounded like the car need a valve adjustment. anyhow i decide that i should first dilute the fuel which contained redline. i went out and pumped 4 gallons of regular figuring that this might have less additives and would dilute the mixture in the car. well when i got back home, popped the hood and took and listen to the car. amazingly enough the ticking noise had diminished. I had never tried the techron product yet. But after this experience i dont think i will be putting anything that doesn't have a bmw product label on it.

Thats it? Thats all what the code said? You have 4 o2 sensors. I would expect a fault code reader would at least tell you which O2 sensor it is.

Anyways... most problems are the pre cat O2 sensor. You can either replace both of them or wait till the fault comes back, scan it with a much better reader, and replace either or even both O2 sensors.

Interesting experience you had with the Redline Fuel Cleaner. I pour them into my tank right before filling it up though.

thanks for the response bmw guy, it was bank 1, sensor 1 which is supposely the location. are these sensors on the pre cat? or somewhere else. how much do 02 sensor cost? and are they difficiult the replace at home? if there is a DIY on it can you point me in that direction. thank you
Yes they are on the pre cat which is also on the exhaust manifold. Its easy to replace the bank 1 sensor 1 (Precat O2 sensor). I dont know how much O2 sensors cost for that part but I know it can be over $100.00. I think you need a special o2 sensor wrench/tool to replace it. You can also remove it with a 22mm crowfoot type wrench.

Make sure you spray some Wd40 on the fittings before you remove it. You may have to remove the smog air pump to get easy access to the precat o2 sensor.

Did you test the car hot? Most o2 sensors dont start working properly unless they are at operating temperature.. The cars mileage usually determines time to change. I have a 99 323i with 98k and Im getting ready to change mine.
Just a thought

yeah i got the same error code...but i didn't use any redline fuel cleaner...the service engine soon light just came on...but when autozone scanned it, it was error p0130, 0150, p1188, p1189...when dealer replaced the 2 sensors, it was around $100 for one...

Those are the the codes that I keep getting. However, everytime I take it in, the light goes off, and they say they can't do anything with it, unless the light is on. I only have 55,000 miles on my car, I thought 02 sensors lasted longer than that. I don't have the money to dish out for new sensors now, I just paid $700 for tires. WTF!!! I mean the light came on and off for awhile in the summer, then nothing for a good 4 months, then two days ago it came on, then shut off and today on again. Can I go awhile without replacing them??? Let me know guys!!!

I just got this code too. Driving around 9MPH. Water Temp at about 208degF, Intake air temp at bout 123degF

Quick search on the web give these possible causes:

O2 usually go bad after 100K miles. Sometimes you'll find some bmw owers changing them as early as 50K. Never really heard of anything lower then that unless it was defect from the factory or running bad gas for a long period of time.

I use fuel additives regularly, never had any issues. I generally use the techron stuff - last weekend I tired the Liqui Moly, purchases online.

Just got it again today. Intake temp at about 54deg Celcius, Outside temp at about 31deg Celcuis. For me it seems to only occur on hot days around 80deg F....
