What do I need to check to see if this is disconnected or bad? This oxygen heater (is that what this is?) I’m trying to pass my smog for CA. Everything works fine. Only thing wrong with the car is it takes a little bit to heat up the cabin than it does in my 335is (which is typically within 2 minutes).

For the E46 CA requires all monitors set except EVAP.
What have you done driving-wise to get monitors to set?
Any long-distance freeway driving?

i thought cat heater wasn’t used in CA smog test?

So all four would need to be replaced? I have oxygen heater not ready on my car. I don’t have a good scanner/monitor that works and reads well. Tried OBD Fusion, but didn’t like it. It doesn’t have stuff like timing monitoring or fuel rail pressure.

Is there a backstory? What is the symptom that leads to believe they are faulty?

I believe (but might be wrong) that indicates the OBD Readiness cycle has not yet been completed. This should set as ready after a certain number of drive cycles have been completed.

If there are no faults for the oxygen sensor heater circuits, then they are likely still good. Try starting the car after sitting overnight and letting it idle for 3-5 minutes before moving/driving it. Turn on the headlights, the rear defrost, and the AC to put some load on the engine. This cold start loaded idle is part of every OBD2 readiness drive cycle I've ever come across.

Guys- that says HRT, not HTR. Obviously, this car has no heart. I think maybe talk to the tin man about getting a heart.

I use BMWScanner 1.4 to look at heater voltages, takes half a second. And all it cost was a $15 dongle.
Since all 4 O2 sensors are heated, and a fault in any one of them (or the wiring) could cause the heart failure you're seeing.

INPA should, too, though, but I forget where it indicates heater voltages.

The heater circuit testing for the O2 sensors should happen almost immediately upon startup. Meant to run the sensor up to temp within 60 seconds.... usually much faster (20 or less).
That's the only time they're really needed anyway as the exhaust will then generally keep them warm enough.

The monitor should complete quickly after a drive, which does make me think you have one that's failing. But that would pop a fault for a failing heater circuit.
Is the cars software modified in anyway?
