Eonon GA950B?

Guys,

I installed an Eonon GA9450B in my 2004 330Ci Convertible w/HK and Factory Nav. I have a few questions and observations:

1. I set the time to use the network/GPS time, but it never changed on its own. Is there another setting to get the date and time correct?

2. Is this setup running an amplified signal to the factory amp? As low as you can go is "1" and at that volume, its still easy to hear. If you turn it up past about "10" it gets very loud and starts to distort. The volume goes WAY higher than 10.

3. I ran it for about an hour while I was playing around with everything. It got quite hot. I pulled the sticker off the top that was blocking 90% of the vent holes, but still....eeek.

4. I downloaded an app called "head unit reloaded" that setup android auto to run without a special dongle. All I can say is "wow", it works great. It read my text messages, played music, navigated, and answered questions through the Google assistant, and it looks great on that big, beautiful screen.

5. The radio tuner is fantastic. I've seen some posts about poor reception, but it pulls in station I did not even know we had around here, and that was in my garage with the short "sport" antenna installed.

6. Installation was a breeze. So much better than the other radios I have installed in the past. Edit: I literally did not cut/splice/tap a single wire. Totally plug and play! The biggest headache installing this thing???? I pulled the face off the center vents trying to get it out of the dash. If I were doing it again, I would look for a youtube video showing how to remove those vents without breaking anything.

7. Eonon tech support was good about getting back to me within 24 hours, but they don't know their own product. They insisted I had to keep the stock radio tuner. That does not seem to be correct! I completely removed the stock head unit and the tuner and there does not seem to be any difference with it plugged in or not.

8. Why does the extension cable have SOOOO many plugs and cables. You really only need the one for the CAN Bus and the big one that plugs into the factory harness. But there are 3 other large connectors you don't even plug in? Edit: I still don't know why there are so many plugs on the extension harness unless it's because if fits multiple years and configurations. Wow they sent a LOT of unused wiring!

9. I don't hear any background noise/ground loop noise. It seems really good in that regard.

10. I did not even run the nav. antenna cable. I'll be navigating through Android auto, so is there any reason to even hook it up? I'm assuming that a connected phone uses it's own GPS antenna, not the external one on the head unit.

11. It has a built in mic, and a place to plug in an external mic. So far, the internal mic. works fine.

12. If you DID want to use the internal navigation, where do you get the maps? I assume there is some nav. software already on there? When I touch "navigation", it appears to launch Google Maps.

13. There were some posts that suggested that the phone won't charge when plugged into the USB, but I can verify that the USB port does charge the phone and works with AA as long as you have the app I mentioned above.

14. I'm looking for a good, wide angle, backup camera made for the E46. Anyone have one they really like? Where does the head unit get a reverse trigger? I did not see anywhere to hook it up? Maybe it already gets it from the factory harness? Edit: The Eonon does get the backup signal from its connection to the factory harness.

I'll do a better review once I have had it a week or so! For now, wow! It's pretty awesome. For $225.00 I have a more modern system in my E46 than in my F30!

The reason why the setting for gps time doesn’t work is because you never hooked up the unit’s gps antenna!!

The reason why the sound is audible at “1” is because the head unit is sending signals to the factory amp that are too “loud” for the amp. Let me be a bit clearer. The factory audio system uses balanced differential signals between the head unit and the amp. Your new head unit is using signals that have a voltage level that is too high for the factory amp. Amps amplify at a specific rate. Volume is varied by raising or lowering the input signal voltage.

The maps depend on the navigation software. Check the owners manual to see what software (the head unit is really a computer) it runs.

haha ha.....check the manual.....have you seen the manual???? Kidding! But there's not much in the manual. I had the GPS antenna hooked up initially AND I had the wi-fi antenna hooked up (you can also specify use network time). I just did not route the GPS cable and mount it because I knew I would not be using it. I ended up setting the time manually and I guess it's fine. I'll be using AA anyway and the time displayed by AA was already correct since it comes from the phone. I'm familiar with pre amp outs, etc. That's what I was asking. So the GA9450B is actually send an already amplified signal to the stock amp? Do you know if all of those RCA outs are pre amp? I don't guess it matters....after having it out on the road today, it sound fine. In the real world (not sitting silently in my garage), you can't hear anything at volume 1 and you have to turn it up to 13-15 to get good, loud sound. I'm happy with it so far, but the screen does not seem to be very bright. I have the android settings at 6 for daytime and 0 for night time. There's not that much difference between 0 and 6.

I need to give another shout out for the "Head Unit Reloaded" app. It was recommended to me by a forum member. Based on my morning commute, it works just as well as AA on the Kenwood head unit in my Miata. I have not figured out how to auto launch it, but it was stable and fast and performed all of the functions available in AA. At only $4.99, it was way cheaper than the dongle! The only issue I had was that the phone and the head unit had to be signed in to the same google account to get it to connect. Otherwise I was getting "p2p connection failed", or something like that. Once I signed the head unit into Google, it connected without problems.

I am running "Head Unit Reloaded" with 2 different google accounts on the phone and unit with no problems. But I only tried music and mapping apps, I don't think I've tested testing with that yet.

I lost 2 screens of app icons and cannot find a way to bring them back. Eonon is telling me to update the software. I am also still dealing with lousy radio reception in a 2006 325Ci convertible with HK. It's been almost 2 months. I am now waiting on Eonon to send me another antenna adapter. Getting more and more frustrated with this unit.

I'm using it with USB. I kept getting a "failed to create p2p connection" or something like that. Then I logged in to my Google account and everything started working. The two might not have been related, but it's working great! Stunned that it would not come from the factory this way. I'm trying to figure out how to get HUR to launch automatically when you plug in the USB. I expected it to be buggy and slow, but wow....works great so far. However, in my other cars I get a different screen when running AA. It would have a blue screen with a list of notifications, etc. I don't see that screen on the Eonon.

CGJ.....Post a pic of what you need. I might have an extra. My kit came with all sorts of wiring I did not end up using. I was thinking about your issue when I was installing mine. Mine has GREAT reception. Did your car have navigation by any chance? The reason I ask, when I started wiring everything up, there was a connector for the nav antenna very close to the radio antenna. It is possible to plug in to the wrong connector. I eventually realized my mistake because of the plastic connector on the correct plug. I believe the actual connector for the nav antenna and the radio antenna are the same. The only difference is the radio antenna has a plastic housing around it.

Awesome, thank you. I'm probably getting the Dynavin HVAC kit with the USB pass through, so this sounds like it will do exactly what I want it to do.

Eonon responded that the unit does not support changing apps on the home screen. Don't know why they would do that. Isn't that the point of using Android as the OS, the ability to customize!
Is there any way to put a different launcher on it? Then I would think you could drag and drop apps that way? I dunno, I'm looking forward to messaging around with it when it comes in.

Item #4 is the adapter I've been waiting for since......forever. I originally suspected it and asked them to ship a replacement back in April. After reloading software and MCU updates they finally said in early May they would ship me another but I still don't have it. Now I am dealing with losing app icons and GPS signal that doesn't reconnect and I'm being told to reload the software again. I just sent them an email that I am done with trying to get this to work and want to return the unit.

I am jealous of you guys who have received an functioning unit. I took a shot and gave it 8 weeks of effort to get it to work but I just don't see this coming to a successful resolution. I am going to return it and look at other options.

Well***8230;.I do have an extra one that was included with the unit. Maybe you get one with the unit and one with the cable, I don't know. Some how, I have an extra. However, if you are sending it back anyway, why bother? Where do you get software and MCU updates? Do you know how to add icons to the home screen. I want head unit reloaded on the home screen, but I can't seem to get it to do that. It says the home screen is full, but it won't let me remove icons!? I'd also like to change the boot screen, but I can't figure out how to do that either.

Yeah....I know what p2p stands for! So....interestingly, today when I plugged the phone in to the USB port, launched itself. Worked great! I don't like not understanding what's going on, but honestly, it's all working and I absolutely love the look of this thing.

I'd love to hear about it if you try to use a different launcher. I've considered that as well. I'm just not sure about the how that works with the apps. I really like the radio app that is built in to the Eonon. I don't want to lose that, but I REALLY want to setup my own home screen. I can't understand how it's an Android setup and you can't move any of the apps on any of the screens. It also has a "widgets" screen, but I can't see that it does anything.

So got the headunit in yesterday (along with my BSW stage one kit). Installed both and so far I'm liking it. No android auto for me, but just running everything through Bluetooth. I'm going to play around with it later today about putting a new launcher on it. We'll see how it goes.

Glad to see you pulled the trigger!!! HUR can be a little picky at times, but as long as it works, its a very slick workaround. The dev even has an app that allows you to run the obd app Torque within AA. The default maps app is google maps. I tend to use Nova Prime launcher with most of my phones, so I am currently using that launcher, I didn't bother to customize it too much, just have the apps on the homepage that I want. When you go with a different launcher, you will "lose" the radio app. It's baked into the stock launcher so you won't be able to pull it up, but there is a way to sideload the apk and get it to work.

FCC Car Launcher seems to be a real popular launcher for head units. I didn't bother with it as I happy with Nova.

In relation to the volume levels, its all about playing with the EQ and built in sound settings. On a side note, I thought I had blown speakers as I was getting a ton of rattling, but the tennis ball trick in the rear shelf solved that.
Where would I find this APK for the radio app? That's honestly the main thing that would keep me from using something else. I listen to the radio every morning on the way to work and having to swap launchers just to do that would be kinda irritating I think.

Yuca....I did fool around with the sound settings on a two hour trip yesterday. Turning the loudness off and then adjusting the EQ made a world of difference. I swear it sounds better than my stock HK radio did! Keep in mind that my HK was only playing through two speakers. Do you find that the Google Maps app that launches when you select "navigation" from the home screen is pretty much unusable? I find it laggy and misreporting times, distances, etc. Running everything through HUR is fantastic. Google maps for navigation, using the Google Assistant to read and send message, Pandora and Google Play Music, they all worked great on the trip. I emailed Eonon and asked how to use the off line navigation they advertised. They said to download Sygic and use their offline maps. I did that, just to see how it worked. Using Google maps through HUR is FAR better. The unit also seems much faster when in HUR. My ONLY complaint with HUR is that it take like 5 touches to start it since you can't add it to the home screen. Another issue I had with HUR is that the music volume could not be adjusted independently of the nav. volume. If I did not have the music up loud, I could not hear the navigation well. Still playing around with it. I took my car to a BMW specialist in NC when I picked up some black seats for the back. The guys at the shop asked a bunch of question about the Eonon and remarked about how much it modernized the interior. The software's not perfect, but I LOVE it. I would still love it had it been $500.00, at $225.00, it's an absolute steal. Now I need to find a good backup camera! Let me know how you do with another launcher. Would consider it just for the fact of being able to customize the layout.

So went ahead and started using Headunit Reloaded and it's exactly what I need. Sometimes I have to plug it in twice and having to select HUR each time isn't bad but would prefer if I could just plug my phone in and go. Other than that though, I'm loving it. May try a different launcher at some point, but with how much I use my radio, losing easy access to that would suck.

Does anyone know where the option is to turn off the screen switching to the backup camera when I put it in reverse? I have one, but I haven't installed it yet. I tried searching through the options but didn't see where to turn it off. It's no big deal, but just wondering if anyone has found it.

#18 ·
Yeah.....finding a way to autolaunch HUR would be nice. I too don't want to lose the radio app on the home screen. What I would LIKE to do is to be able redefine which app opens when you touch those big icons on the home screen. Have you figured out how the head unit can get a data signal? I mean, I want to be able to use the Google assistant and Google Maps/Play without going through HUR.

According to this page...

https://www.eonon.com/Android-Car-G...n-Car-GPS-Navigation-with-32G-ROM-Built-in-DSP-Support-Apple-Car-Auto-Play.html

You can get 4g with a dongle. Not sure how it works and it doesn't look like they have it on their site.

Ran into a new problem. Android Auto and HUR were working great last night. No issues. I hadn't used it all day, then went to plug in my phone this evening and nothing. The headunit didn't seem to recognize that a phone was plugged in and when I went to HUR it said no phone connected to USB. I thought maybe it was my cord, so I tried another, same thing. Nothing. I pulled the headunit out, unplugged the USB from the back of the headunit and plugged it back in. It worked! I once again unplugged my phone and tried to plug it back in, nothing. Headunit didn't recognize that a phone was plugged in. Tried the same fix from before, and it didn't work either.

Anyone having problems like this? Or know a possible solution?

Hmmmm***8230;..maybe try rebooting the phone? The only time I had a connection issue was when I was playing around with "wi fi direct".

As for the data connection to the phone, I have been experimenting with using the phone's hot spot and connecting the head unit through wi-fi. I really want to try a different launcher but I need to know how to access the radio first!

I'll give that a try tomorrow.

I have used my phones hot spot as well as connected to the wifi at my house to access the Play Store and download offline maps on Google Maps

Remember, HUR is a work around that was made to work with these headunits. You want it to work 110% with AA, buy the dongle...

First time you plug your phone into the HU, you should get a pop up asking if you want HUR to be the default action. If you set that up, it should try to automagically initialize AA when you plug in the usb. If this doesn't work, you can click on the app and tap the usb button and it should load.

Radio apk could be found online with some searching. I believe this is the one I used. Acquire at your own risk.
https://mega.nz/file/IdB0VYCI#7ClyVR2fkTYxjVWcaZ0uTGuMCsvPpOhg-p_9WxjvQi0

Unfortunately, Eonon doesn't allow the user to customize the default launcher, so you can't change the functions of the icons on the home screen.

Yuca.....how difficult is it to install a new launcher? Very interested in doing this. I'd buy that dongle for AA, but HUR is working GREAT for me. My only issues with it is that you can't turn up the nav volume without turning up the music volume. If I am listening to music at a relatively low volume, I can't hear the nav. Also, I can't get it to auto launch when you plug it in. Is there anyway to reset that "default action" you mentioned? It's possible that I accidentally skipped that when I first set it up. Now I have to press apps, swipe a couple of times to get to HUR (because I can't figure out how to re-order the apps), press HUR, press USB, Press Samsung...., then it connects. Would be nice if I could just plug it in and go!

One observation regarding the screen.....I was concerned about screen brightness because my car is a convertible. I also own and Miata. I put a Kenwood in the Miata, and I swear I can't see the screen half the time. The Eonon is GREAT in the convertible. I can see it just fine in the sun, even with the top down. Reflections off the seats are an issue, but no way around that if you mount a large piece of glass in the dash. Also, I typically wear polarized sun glasses. The Kenwood is completely unreadable and even my Samsung is difficult to see with those glasses on. No issues with the Eonon with polarized glasses. I can see it just fine plenty bright. There is a weird issue when swiping on the home screens. About half the time, it fails to recognize my swipe. It only does this on the home screens. I find I have to touch, pause briefly, then swipe and it's 100%. If I just swipe quickly like a phone, it frequently does not respond. Again, only on the home screens, so I assume it's software related. It DOES not do that in HUR, or any other apps as far as I can tell.

A new launcher is as easy as downloading an app and setting it to default in settings. It will prompt you about the default launcher the first time going back home after changing launchers and you can always go back to default. There are multiple locations for the sound and might be sound settings in the HUR app as well. I do recall hearing that you can raise the nav volume itself up in AA when it is responding/talking to you with the headunits volume buttons. To reset the usb defaults you might have to go into developer settings in your phone and revoke usb authorizations. Maybe clear the connected cars in AA settings too.

As a side note, you already have HUR. With this app on your phone, you can get wireless AA to work. Lags a bit on my old phone, but might be worth a shot. You do have to click on the app to get it started though.

Yeah....me too...."0" at night, "6" in the day. It's got a few little issues, but overall I love this thing!

Update:
So....I went ahead and spent close to $60.00 on the AA dongle. I can't see ANY difference in running AA on the dongle compared to just running it through HUR. Really....it seems exactly the same. I thought running it through the dongle might help with the volume issue I was having (nav voice not loud enough), but it's exactly the same as running it through HUR. So....my advice....save your money......pay $5.00 for HUR and enjoy your new Android powered stereo. I'm still thinking about installing a new launcher. I want to see if someone else has any luck with that on the GA9450B before I attempt it.

Another tip:
According to Eonon the parking grid lines produced by the head unit are not adjustable. That makes them useless! I ended up installing a Kenwood CMOS320 camera. The Kenwood produces its own lines which are adjustable. You can center the image since the camera is not mounted in the center of the car (the trunk handle prevents it) and then adjust all of the lines however you want. It's relatively expensive at $199.00, but it solves the parking line issue and has a great field of view.

So I'm back, and damn, has this been a cluster.

So, as I said before, I was having problems having Head Unit Reloaded recognizing my phone. I said forget struggling with it and went ahead and bought the dongle from Eonon. It came in and it still wouldn't work. The app they have you download would recognize when I would plug in the dongle, but wouldn't recognize my phone when I plugged it in.

Finally contacted Eonon about it. I was asking for some troubleshooting tips because it seemed to work well for everyone else, so maybe it was something I was doing wrong. As we all know, communication is tough because of the time differences, which I totally understand. Their first suggestion was a link to a different app. Tried that, it also did not work. Their next suggestion was to update the software and sent me a link to the file.

Here's where everything went nuts. Put the file on a thumb drive and it read it, gave me the option to update and started...then stopped with an error at 3%. So contacted them again, and again, they said to try to update it, sent me a link TO THE SAME FILE. Thinking MAYBE something had changed, I tried it, same problem. Now, this failure to update has at this point, been going on several days, because I only get one message from them a day, even when I stayed up to be able to reply right back. Their next message said to download the correct APK for the dongle I was using...but my radio currently doesn't work, at all, stuck at a black screen because it went to update the software and couldn't, so it's stuck on a screen wanting to update but can't. That last message was this morning. I replied back that I can't download an APK because I can't even start my radio. Oh lord, this has been a hassle.

So, to anyone in this thread, specifically @toddkageals I need a favor please. Looking on XDA developers, there are several roms that I could possibly use to load in something new on the head unit. Problem is, with all of these cheap head units, there are a multitude of different ones, and you can only use certain roms on certain head units. So if someone could go to the settings -> system -> about device of their GA9450B and take a picture of the screen, I would REALLY appreciate it. Here's what I'm looking for.

im trying DESPERATELY to try to get a 4g USB dongle working so this badboy has 4g......looks like I may have to send it back at this rate and throw another 100 bucks at a ~400$ head unit for a REAL stereo ;(

I was thinking about to upgrade my car stereo with Eonon, but it seems it is too complicated for me and there are so many issues. I noticed that there is a new XTRONS Q series which retains origial car stereos while updrading it with a new Android systems. Is there a similar car stereo from Eonon?

I installed an Eonon GA9350 in my 06 330CiC with HK/NAV but get no radio reception whatsoever. I think the extension harness is different from yours but did you run into any problems with getting reception? Any connections you had to change of was it plug n play and everything worked?
