Guys,
I installed an Eonon GA9450B in my 2004 330Ci Convertible w/HK and Factory Nav. I have a few questions and observations:
1. I set the time to use the network/GPS time, but it never changed on its own. Is there another setting to get the date and time correct?
2. Is this setup running an amplified signal to the factory amp? As low as you can go is "1" and at that volume, its still easy to hear. If you turn it up past about "10" it gets very loud and starts to distort. The volume goes WAY higher than 10.
3. I ran it for about an hour while I was playing around with everything. It got quite hot. I pulled the sticker off the top that was blocking 90% of the vent holes, but still....eeek.
4. I downloaded an app called "head unit reloaded" that setup android auto to run without a special dongle. All I can say is "wow", it works great. It read my text messages, played music, navigated, and answered questions through the Google assistant, and it looks great on that big, beautiful screen.
5. The radio tuner is fantastic. I've seen some posts about poor reception, but it pulls in station I did not even know we had around here, and that was in my garage with the short "sport" antenna installed.
6. Installation was a breeze. So much better than the other radios I have installed in the past. Edit: I literally did not cut/splice/tap a single wire. Totally plug and play! The biggest headache installing this thing???? I pulled the face off the center vents trying to get it out of the dash. If I were doing it again, I would look for a youtube video showing how to remove those vents without breaking anything.
7. Eonon tech support was good about getting back to me within 24 hours, but they don't know their own product. They insisted I had to keep the stock radio tuner. That does not seem to be correct! I completely removed the stock head unit and the tuner and there does not seem to be any difference with it plugged in or not.
8. Why does the extension cable have SOOOO many plugs and cables. You really only need the one for the CAN Bus and the big one that plugs into the factory harness. But there are 3 other large connectors you don't even plug in? Edit: I still don't know why there are so many plugs on the extension harness unless it's because if fits multiple years and configurations. Wow they sent a LOT of unused wiring!
9. I don't hear any background noise/ground loop noise. It seems really good in that regard.
10. I did not even run the nav. antenna cable. I'll be navigating through Android auto, so is there any reason to even hook it up? I'm assuming that a connected phone uses it's own GPS antenna, not the external one on the head unit.
11. It has a built in mic, and a place to plug in an external mic. So far, the internal mic. works fine.
12. If you DID want to use the internal navigation, where do you get the maps? I assume there is some nav. software already on there? When I touch "navigation", it appears to launch Google Maps.
13. There were some posts that suggested that the phone won't charge when plugged into the USB, but I can verify that the USB port does charge the phone and works with AA as long as you have the app I mentioned above.
14. I'm looking for a good, wide angle, backup camera made for the E46. Anyone have one they really like? Where does the head unit get a reverse trigger? I did not see anywhere to hook it up? Maybe it already gets it from the factory harness? Edit: The Eonon does get the backup signal from its connection to the factory harness.
I'll do a better review once I have had it a week or so! For now, wow! It's pretty awesome. For $225.00 I have a more modern system in my E46 than in my F30!
