Doing the oil sump gasket this week and checking the procedures.

TIS says:
Sealing surfaces clean and free of seal debris.

Apply a bead of Drei Bond 1209 sealant (refer to BMW Parts Department) approx. 3 mm wide and 2 mm deep in area of parting joints.

The above is out of stock and must be ordered and costs $25 for 50g tube. I am wondering whether I can use the following product in the same manner:

My understanding is that the Drei Bond 1209 is a 'pliable non-hardening" sealant. Black rtv is pretty squishy when cured so what you have should work fine.

Fwiw, Versachem has a Type 2 Gasket Sealant that is labeled as such and I think may be closer to the Drei Bond:

I couldn't find Hylomar easily, but the versachem type 2 was cheap and available. Have used it successfully on two oil pans, two valve covers, and on the Vanos gasket between the timing cover & Vanos itself.

Loctite has a something similar:

Permatex Ultra Black is what I have used on a number of VW gasketless oil pans and also on the 1/2 moon area of the BMW valve cover gaskets.

I find that Ultra Black is best to allow it to skin/firm up for around 30 minutes or what is in the instructions before final torquing.

Seems like Versachem may be similar to Permatex Ultra Black. Who knows if Permatex is a rebranded product over seas??
