Ok first time poster, long time, and extensive reader. I have searched throughly, with no avail in order to find the answer to my question.

Basically
I pulled the M54B30 engine from my 2001 330ci ZF automatic transmission and rebuilt it.
I pulled a Getrag 250 5 speed manual transmission from a 2004 325i.
I have a beautiful 2002 325ci that I will be pulling the motor and automatic transmission out of and replacing them with my 2001 B30 paired with the 2004 Getrag 250.

The problem :
The 2004 Getrag 250 has a 22 spline input shaft, and a 220mm clutch kit.
The m54b30 requires a 240mm clutch kit.
No problem, right? Just buy a bigger clutch and bolt it up. Cannot, because after 2003 they introduced the 22 spline input shaft. Therefore my transmission requires a clutch kit, with a 22 tooth input shaft hole. And has to be 240mm for the B30 engine.

After 2003 all m54b30 e46 manual got a 6 speed. There is no such thing as a 5 SPEED 22 SPLINE 240mm clutch kit.

There is only a 5 SPEED 22 SPLINE 220mm clutch kit for the 325i, and 6 SPEED 22 SPLINE 240mm clutch kits for the 330 and 325xi.

TLDR; how or where do I get a 22 spline clutch for post 2003 transmission, that is 22 spline 240mm, and is also for 5 speed manual transmission?

I know this is a possible swap, as I have read other users have done it. What about a 6spd clutch for the 2003+ 330 mentioned above?

They have a 22 spline input shaft hole and are 240mm. They also work in 325xi, which I believe were 5 speed. Will this work in my 5 speed Getrag and my B30?

What about the flywheel? It doesn’t have ANY input shaft teeth marks, but the parts stores say that it’s specific to 2003+ or not. And I thought that all e46 from 1999-2006 besides M had the same flywheel. I need help.

Any particular reason you are mating a 250g to a 3.0 engine? The older 10 spline gearboxes, both getrag 250g and ZF 320 use the same flywheel for the engines from 2.0 to 3.0. I'm running 240mm 10 spline cluch in getrag 250g. If you can find the part numbers for both flywheels 325i and 330i (your later 22 spline models) in spare parts catalog and they are the same, I assume the clutches will fit. I tried to search for part # in real oem and it showed no part numbers for 3.0 flywheel and IDK why.

I am putting a Getrag 250 on a 3.0 because that’s my only option of getting a manual transmission without spending a million bucks. e46 has been raided and pillaged in Los Angeles and zf 320 on eBay are darn near 2k after shipping now. I have been searching realoem all morning.

Flywheel
  • Post 2003 325i flywheel interchangeable for all other e46 regardless of 22 spline: 21217512474. This will work for my flywheel.
  • Post 2003 330ci/6 speed and SMG 325i/325xi/ 5 Speed: 21207533868. This will not work for my flywheel. According to real OEM this is different than the rest, but I don’t know how? It’s a 240mm flywheel with the same bolt pattern to the naked eye
Clutch
  • I can run a 240mm clutch kit in Getrag 250 for certain, but there is no such thing as a 240mm clutch kit for a post 2003 Getrag 250. Why? because all Getrag 250 is a 5speed, post 2003 Getrag 250 has a 22 spline shaft, 3.0 motor requires 240mm clutch kit.
  • The only 240mm clutch with 22 splines is 6 speed. For example, 21207531556 clutch kit is 22 spline and 240mm. This should theoretically fit. But real oem says that clutch kit is to match the flywheel above, and is specific to 2003+ 330ci, 325xi, 325i SMG.

On the flywheel, I am doing a PMC adapter plate on mine, but still it might not work with a 240mm clutch. I will have to take measurements or even just buy the 240mm and test it out. The clutch they sent me mounts right up to this perfectly, but when i looked at the input shaft i see it wont work.

Whut?

Did I miss the part where the hallucinogens were dispensed???

A 228mm clutch will work with a 3l engine if you're not slipping the shit out of it all the time.

The 240mm friction disc is available in 10 and 22 spline counts.

The 240mm kit from an XI can be either 10 or 22 splines.

this is not rocket surgery- get a 240mm flywheel, pressure plate and a 22 spline disc.

Just claim you have a 2004 xit. That does it right there.

sheesh.

If I get it right the OP, and also me, we weren´t sure if you can mix match a older style 240mm flywheel, a 240mm 22 splined disc with appropriate pressure plate, meaning that IF a 22 splined discs had different pressure plates, would they bolt up to a older style flywheel? (bolt pattern) that´s all. And some mushrooms.

It’s not as simple as getting a 22 spline 240mm clutch kit for the 6 speed, and bolting it up. The reason being is the flywheel difference! Unless the only difference is the flywheel having the pilot bearing being inside the flywheel as apposed to the crank, then the 6 speed clutch won’t fit! Unless I hear it from someone who has personally done it themselves and can verify, it’s a big risk considering the clutch kit and flywheel is almost 1k dollars.
