e46's were never built in North America.

Most are built in Germany in a couple of different plants, and there are some that are built in South Africa.

You can find out by decoding your VIN.

Most E46's are made in Germany. you will have to decode your fin to figure out which factory. Some 325I's where made in south Africa.

X3, X5, Z4's in the u.s. are mostly made in South Carolina.

while I was doing carfaxes looking for a 325 e46 model, I noticed some of the export destinations were listed as Panama and Brazil, at least 2 I saw for Panama and 3 for Brazil....do they have plants down there or is it just a 'holding cell' for further transport to the US, after coming from germany?

If your VIN starts with a W, then it was made in Germany.

The WMI code tells all. First three digits of the VIN:
WBA = BMW standard, WBS = BMW M Gmbh (the Motorsport family)

If it starts a 1, 4, or 5 then it is US (such as Z4, X5).

Thats what I thought, it was also mentioned on another post that the new E90's were built here in the states. Can anyone verify? That was the excuse for the poor interior on them... lol.
