water temperature M54

Hello!

I was wondering what the normal operating temperature of a M54 (manual transmission) is. Outside Temperature is currently -1°C/30°F and the coolant temperature ("secret menu") reaches from 94°C (when driving off the traffic lights) to 99°C (start standing at the lights) / 201°F to 210°F. Shouldn't the temperature be more stable?

Also I was noticing great amounts of white exhaust smoke/steam. I know that this is normal at this temperatures, but it steams a VERY long time driving in the city (also after 20+ minutes). Does this also happen to someone?

Normal. Bmw operating temps are from 75 to 113c. 9/10 cars run in the mid 90s.

I just did some cooling maintenance yesterday and my car also fluctuates between 95 to 100 moving to standing still.

thanks for the quick answers! definately more relieved now.

I'm a bit paranoid because a week a go my expansion tank cracked and 3 weeks before that the bleeder screw broke. In both cases I lost a lot of water and feared of a destroyed head/gasket
The car currently has about 150.000km/93.000miles on it and magically a lot of things went wrong in just a couple of months. For example: fuel pump, oil leak (probably oil filter housing), bleeder screw, expansion tank.
Is this some kind of magic mileage where planned obsolescence starts to appear?

All common failure points on the E46. Fortunately, replacement parts aren't too expensive relative to other vehicles.

The expansion tank becomes brittle over time. Same thing with the bleeder screw. Good chance your radiator hoses will go next. Some cooling systems have lasted up to 200K miles while others failed under 75K miles. Luck of the draw, but do note that these components have a habit of failing in sequence which is why many replace the entire system as a preventive measure.

At the bare minimum, if you already replaced the expansion tank, I'd say replace the radiator hoses and monitor the water pump for noise or leaks.
