As if i need this issue now....water pump just started leaking, I'm guessing its the pump, as inspection on all hoses (including one under intake) (took air box off to access it) are all clean, but coolent is running down the engine (front) coming from above the crank pulley. Once the car has cooled off i will strip couple things more to make sure it is the pump..if it is ill have to park it for a while till i get access to funds to replace the pump.

This thread i will keep as a journal.

No i have no idea when last it had a cooling system refresh

No i cant afford to do a refresh now, i can't even afford a pump

And no i dont use blue spec coolent, when i bought it, it had just plain straight water. So my green coolent aint gonna be worse than straight water.

I will update this thread as i go along, im on an extremely tight budget as college started again and I drive (with the bmw) every time 60km to college and back, fuel going up again, no job, getting government check monthly (R350) so yeah...please dont crucify me based on my coolent colour...

Instead enjoy the pictures and repairs that i will post here...

I will confirm its the pump and be replacing it with a febi pump... Will report back on my findings once everything is cooled and stripped.

It will be. Only other option at that loc is top hose to tstat and that would be obvious. Easy job though.

Stripped some things of today to inspect the pump location.

And found that yes indeed is the pump thats leaking, also has some play (unsure if its normal or not) aswell as makes a noise when spinning

Heres a video

I had an option between febi and GMB pump brand and many guys on loacal groups said febi does not last long, if its a choice between those two, GMB will be a better choice, so ill be going with that, and next time i will replace with an oem branded one.

Will update here as i go along.

water pump alright, do you have graf there? a little bit cheaper than BMW Saleri or Hepu, but just as good(in my experience).
I have replaced the BMW water pumps in my current and previous vehicles except the X5 which has HEPU.
Have not had Febi nor GMB.

Shaft play is not normal and it's the reason for the leak - a shaft seal can't seal something that's wobbling around all over the place.

There's no need to spend the money for a pump that says BMW on the package, Saleri is who makes them for BMW so get that one and you'll be getting the same product at a lower price.

It does not say where its made, only that its made "in-house" what ever that means.

There is both russian and Espanol on the box with English.

And it says the impeller is made of (PPS GF40<) but no specifics of where/country of origin.

Lets hope it atleast lasts 2years

Water pump is in, i did not manage to drain the block, my swivel extension was to big, and there was no other way, even tried with a 1/4" and it started to round the bolt.

So i brought a hose and used water pressure in the water pump hole to push all the old (most of it) coolant out, untill no green was seen..both on the radiator side and block side..

Then new pump in and bled it using distilled water....yes plain distilled water..atleast for now untill i can buy a smaller swivel that wil fit in there, cause i need to drain out the block when switching to the new (red) coolant... (Blue is what mostly used on here but when i contacted my bmw dealer they said the new coolant is red so ill he buying from them..idk)

I then let it idle up to temp, and took it on a normal drive ... Results: 92-94 Celsius

Took it on a spiritual drive (high rpm's)
Results: 90 - 94 Celsius.

Seems like bleeding was successful.

New pump : GMB
Kilometers : 288672km (ill double check)

On the subject of the coolant drain plug on the block, I've seen a few people say that this is pointless when replacing the waterpump as they are both at the same height on the block, so theoretically you wouldn't get anymore coolant out the drain plug than you would when removing the waterpump?

Sorry, but that's incorrect.

You get quite a bit more from the drain plug when you pull it, plus it helps with flushing with fresh water. I actually don't remember them being the same height. I thought the plug was lower.

A great way to test this is to get under it and pull that plug. You will receive confirmation in the form of a shower.

3.8 years later and the water pump needs changing, i dont know how many km's i have done but i have been cross country multiple times ( >7 times) and drivern around a LOT aswell, so im gona say the GMB brand did not do to bad in my books,

Tho a lot is going on now, i have to replace the fuel pump aswell as the filter and water pump.

If you got 50,000 miles out of it that's not terrible but it ought to do better.

I realize you were on a budget but I'm an advocate for the Stewert HP water pump. I know it's a hot topic here but I've got 250,000 miles on my car (original owner) and have only replaced the pump twice. Once around 60,000 miles and once around 200.000 miles when the Stewert had a leaky O Ring (which, at the time, they replaced).

So in 250,000 miles I've paid for one water pump.
