UUC TSE3 Exhaust (Axle-back) - Weld vs Clamps

Merry Christmas all!

I got myself a Christmas present this year, a TSE3 muffler ("lite") with the black tips to replace the stock ZHP one. I think it's probably one of the last mods I will do to the car for a while.

I have zero experience with aftermarket exhausts, and could use some input with my options. The kit comes with instructions and clamps, but from research it seems like welding is the "better" option? I can clamp (and later weld), or just weld from the start.

Welding:
Pros:
  • less chance of exhaust leaks
  • less chance of mounting clamps/hardware rattling or rubbing against components (such as tires)
  • less chance of exhaust shifting/twisting during heat expansion
  • less chance of anything coming apart (more reliable)
Cons:
  • more expensive than clamps, more permanent than clamps (need to cut to reverse).
  • associated "risks" with welding: possibility of bricking some electronics (DME) - zero risk if they know what they are doing but a risk none-the-less, difficulty welding two different steels together (UUC is T-304, not sure what stock exhaust is made out of), experience of welder, eg: mistakes or reverting more more costly to remedy.
  • would void UUC's lifetime warranty

I, knowing nothing, was going to just cut the stock muffler off and follow UUC's instructions, but having read about aftermarket exhausts, many seem to just end up welding the system together... I don't like voiding warranties, but I didn't think warranties for exhausts are that important (nice to have for sure)? Your recommendations are appreciated!

V-band clamps are cream of the crop but don't think that's what OP meant - probably one of those generic U-bolt clamps with slip-on pipes given the fingers you can see on the input to the muffler.

FWIW my BMW Performance muffler has been clamped that way for a bunch of years now - it does leak ever so slightly (judging by some spot where the pipes slip over each other) but it doesn't matter to me

The clamps do appear to be the generic exhaust clamps. Accuseal 57.2 mm clamps:

I can see what the exhaust shop recommends too of course - they may have other clamps or other options for me that I'm unaware of.

Yeah, those look much more legit than what I have, I'd just clamp it.

I did have to replace one since it cracked, but that was after 5+ years and some winter driving (total amount unknown since PO has the exhaust installed at some point):

Thanks for the replies and recommendations all. I ended up going with the exhaust shop's recommendation and had it welded. Can't go wrong either way. RIP warranty . In and out in an hour and don't regret it one bit after the drive home. Lots of peace of mind without clamps. Can take more pics of welds/details later. Seattle rain just messes everything up.
