torque converter locking up

Hello, I have a 2003 bmw 325i, auto trans e46. I believe my torque converter has been locking up. 2 months ago was the fisrt time it happened and it did it on the interstate going about 80mph and almost caused a pretty bad wreck. I assumed at the time that it was my diff that broke and locked up. I took the diff out and confirmed it broke so I was sure that was the issue. I ended up replacing it and put it in and on the way home it locked up again. I’m just seeking answers on why this may be happening and what to do to fix it.

The first day it happened and broke my diff I had to jump start the car 5 minutes before it happend and I thought maybe it had something to do with a low battery.. is it possible that low battery would cause a torque converter to lock up? I’ve had no warning lights on the dash and the car runs completely fine except some grinding and whining noises right before it lockes up.

Ive never dealt with transmission stuff before so any information anyone can give would be appreciated

So to be clear, your rear wheels locked solid at speed? Both, or just one?

There aren't many things that are capable of doing that- the parking pawl
will shear, the driveshaft will break, etc. etc.

This is one of those things that we can speculate about on the internet
for days, but without your car in front of us, the little clues that point
at the culprit are probably going to get missed.
For a gross fault like this, you're going to want a mechanic who learned
how to work on these cars when they were new.

imho.

The only bad thing happens with a locked up TC is when car stopped at the traffic light -- stall the engine. It's nothing wrong with a locked up TC with a car moving. Your problem is in the tranny: something that locked up the output flange. Tranny has to be opened up for inspection.
