Squeal when quick/hard shifting at above 4500 RPMs...what could it be?

I noticed it while I was getting on the freeway today. It was a relatively short on-ramp, so I punched it in first gear up to about 4500 or so and shifted quickly, trying to gain speed. As soon as the clutch engaged after shifting, I heard a nice half-second squeal sound coming from my car. What can this be? Maybe the clutch is slipping? Or a belt is getting loose?

I did some more testing and found that it only happens above 4500 RPMs, and I have to shift/engage the clutch fairly quickly.

Any ideas?

Same here, dont know what it is!!

yes i hate this noise, its when you are shifting quick, not a power shift just a quick shift.

Seems to me that the clutch may be wearing pre-maturely due to lots of use, but i have not detected any slipping or any wierd sensation.

its a loud squeek which i really dont like, i will be going to my shop to see what they think it is.

By the way is clutch covered under the maintenece program??

Hope to shed some light on this as its concerning to me!!

if i find out what it is i will post the problem.

:dunno:

The thing with mine is that its only started happening in the last week or so. The noise is pretty loud too. So I'm thinking something is starting to go bad, or wearing out. I also have no indications of clutch wear, it still grabs well. I am going to make an appointment for the dealer to check it out. Whatever it is, I hope its covered under warranty.

I get a squeal on my auto tranny somtimes when it shifts too...
Auto transmissions have clutches too.

I'm not dismissing the transmission as "a" noise source, just "the" noise source. As far as I know, there is nothing in the manual transmission that would produce this type of sound. Bad synchros usually cause gear grinding or getting stuck in gear. Also, when you are accelerating and going through the gears it doesn't usually cause synchro problems. They are usually caused when the transmission isn't up to speed and you try to shift..... this is where blipping the throttle comes into play when downshifting.

Your synchros spin about a couple 1000 rpms faster than your engine's rpms...The synchros get the gears to get up to speed easier so you don't have to force it into gear, or double-clutch...If you shift hard, then you are forcing the car into gear, which causes the synchros to go a little crazy...My guess is that it's your synchros just making noises...As for the automatic tranny, can't help you there. Just take it easy shifting, don't force it into gear, I know when your racing, or in a "speed-demon" mood, you don't really pay attention, but you will wish you did when the bill comes for new synchros or tranny!!

It definately sounds like a belt to me. My 3000GT VR4 had really bad synchros and they made a grinding noise when you shifted. So that's not it. And it's definately not tire squeal. I know what that sounds like to and that's not it. My tires are still pretty new.

Hmmm, perhaps the throwout bearing? I read somewhere awhile back where they mentioned that many modern cars have sealed bell housings, and the dust worn off a clutch (which is considered a hazardous material, which is why the housing is sealed) is kept inside and blows around the clutch, throwout bearing, etc. If you have been doing alot of harsh shifting, accompanied by excessive clutch wear, perhaps you have a lot clutch dust in there, which has gotten into the throwout bearing and is causing it to squeal, especially noticeably at the higher RPMs... just a thought...

It's not the clutch.
