I had some Gorilla glue laying around.
I wire brushed the contact area perimeter and stuck it on.
I will report back in a few days.

If it falls off on the highway, best source for cheap OEM replacement ?

I'd just replace the pair. They aren't expensive. But if you're hell-bent on gluing it back, a clear epoxy is your best choice.

 

Doesn't Gorilla Glue expand as it dries? Depending on the formulation, I don't think it's water-resistant either...

I had a lens come off recently, I just replaced both.

 

All four of my rear lights had delaminated. As the outer two were still in great nick, I resealed them with super glue and then put a bead of Gorilla Silicone on the edge. They've been fine for several years now. The inner two were quite faded so I just replaced them with the newer style. If the outer two ever re-delaminate, I'll use the JB Weld plastic bond I referenced.

 

I used some old model making glue. Rockauto is cheap - m3 ones cheapest.

 

On my previous 46 I just used cheap superglue, was still nice and snug a few years later when I sold the car. Had to replace them on my current 330 because it fell off on the highway... lol. If one falls off you should pull the other side off and reglue that one as well since it'll only be a few weeks behind the other one.

ABS cement. Fast easy and permanent.
I use it for the Tupperware on my bikes.

 

I’m with the replace camp. They’re cheap enough and old ones yellow at the reverse lens. On the coupe you even had OE options from the later models that made it look better.

3M Plastic Emblem and Trim Adhesive - Resistant to water, heat and fuels. Dries clear. You don't need/want much, just a few strategically placed dabs.

Not a fan of replace with after market, if OE can be repaired for a nickel of glue.
Also, the aftermarket new and shiny does not fit with the overall aged aesthetic of the car.
And aftermarket is often cheaper flimsier than OE.

For now, I am hoping the glue will hold.

That hasn't been my experience after 5 years with my $37 pair of smoked aftermarket newer style.

 

I never thought e46s would have patina.

 

These cars are worth $3500 and are 20 years old.
They are mostly high mileage, well used, oft abused, and now rusty relics.

 

I went outside and tried to pry off the lens. It seems stuck on pretty good !

 

I used a pick and a box cutter to pry and scrape the adhesive away. Requires patience.

Yes. Mine did the same.
Miewere full of crap.Moss and stuff.I managedto easde the lenses of them, clean them up and glue them back on. Needed some clamps tohold the lense in placve while the glue dried.
That was about 4 years ago. They still good. (before images shown)

 

This may or may not help but, there's this double sided clear tape I've seen at Wal-Mart... haven't used it, just seen it at a distance.
