Both my 2001 325 and 2001 318 have multiple cracks AND lots of bits missing from my windscreen covers due to the strong Australian sun. I have seen on another thread that the Australian dealerships want about $220 each and I need two!

A couple of years ago I got a good price from USA but then they came back with "oversize package" and wanted an additional $250 for postage. Naturally I resisted the temptation to buy.

I am presently in Ireland visiting family and enquired about price here. Euro 51 each (about $A75) +VAT. Enquiring with the airline I can bring oversized packages back free as long as I am within my weight limit of 30 kg. I am certainly going to be sure I am! And I can claim the VAT back as I am exporting them from Ireland! A win all round.

I ordered from a BMW dealership in Waterford, Ireland on Wednesday, and they were ready for pickup today, Friday, having been delivered from the BMW warehouse in the UK.

The two together seem pretty sturdy so heading out to buy some bubble wrap, together with some cardboard should make the package secure enough to arrive safely. Hoping so.

Part number for RHD Sedan is 51718189100.
Part number for RHD Coupe is 51718232896.

Just a thought for other Australians who might be travelling to the UK or Ireland in the future.

I do feel a bit mean but if I started accepting orders I reckon I would be looking at trying to bring in 20 or more.

While I am sure I will get my two through Customs, more than that and I think I would be considered to be importing commercial quantities, let alone getting into excess weight problems.

I just thought others travelling may not of thought of buying a cover while in Ireland or the UK and bringing it back as "oversize luggage".

Well it looks like there are a couple of alternatives to paying BMW prices locally.

It looks like Jetpart Australasia have bought in a number and amortised the freight. So whether you import from Europarts for $110 or from Jetpart for $150 it is still better than $220 from BMW.

Perhaps with a group buy you could get them for $100 which would be great.

Still happy with my $75 buy, but not everyone is travelling overseas!

Arrived back from Ireland yesterday with my "Oversized Baggage" that had no damage whatsoever! My bubble wrap and cardboard did the job.

Unnwrapping I found that I had wrapped the parcel a bit too tightly and the soft leading edge (the bit against the windscreen that cracks) was a bit distorted at the ends. Soaking in a bowl of hot water soon fixed that, and the pressure against the windscreen will fix any the other wavers.

Fitted the first one today, (I have two cars to do, 318i and 325i) and found that a small gear puller I had, which I had bought many years ago as a "Battery Terminal Puller", was just what was needed to pull the wiper blade from its shaft. As others had said, some of the white plugs remained in the car. Remove these so you are looking at the bare steel. The new cover has new white plugs already fitted.

Vacuumed up the dirt and rubbish and washed down the whole area. Carefully clean the bottom cm or so of the windscreen before fitting the new cover. The rubber seal on the lower edge of the old cover, where the cabin filter fits, just pulls off for refitting to the new cover.

For those that are worried, cracks and even pieces missing from your old cover are not going to cause water to get into the cabin, as the drainage from this area has been well thought out.

All in all a simple job, and a cheap one for me, $95.77 each including VAT, which I couldn't get back as, "Bolands BMW have not registered for VAT reclaim". Bummer, but still I am not complaining, better than $220 each from the stealerships.
