I’m planing out the build for my e46 and I know that I do not want to keep the stock diff and my preferred choice would be the m3 but I’m not sure how difficult/possible it would be.

So would I have to cut out any part of the body to put in the subframe? Or can you swap it somewhat easily?
when they said “subframe“ they meant the differential cage/carrier.
there are pros and cons swapping in an M3 diff. one major point is that it’s a 3.62:1 ratio. which is pretty short gearing. this works fine for the M3 that has an 8,100 rpm redline and an overdriven 6th gear transmission. without these it’s gonna be short and a buzz bomb.

Yes, it's possibe. The previous owner of my ZHP swapped an M3 rear-end in the back of my car. The thread is around here somewhere...

Everything was a direct bolt with the original ZF 6 speed and 330i wheel hubs/brakes, including the driveshaft and axles.

The axles were the tricky part for him. They fit, but it wasn't without a brief war. After several hours of fighting them, he had to persuade them a bit by torch heating the hubs just enough to fit the axles, while being careful not to overdue it e.g. ruining the hubs and bearings.

My ride:
3.62 M LSD and Sub Frame
ZF 6 Speed
M3 Driveshaft
M3 Axles
M3 Rear Swaybar
330i Hubs/Brakes/Suspension
