yes it is normal for the CEL to be on... the code will read "ambient temp sensor"

as far as what to order.... well you need to determine what is wrong

take a look under the car and see if your fender liner is still in tact... chances are it isn't.... what usually happens is it catches something high off the ground (speed bump or a ditch for example) ... disconnectls, comes off, and the temp sensor WITH the wiring comes along with it

so you'll need to buy the whole "repair" kit rather than just the sensor

If everything is still in tact, then you probably just need a new sensor... however for the $6 or whatever it is extra, you get a new plug, wire, etc... for a small amount, its always best to have more than what you need

contact Evan or Jason at Tischer, they will hook you up with the part numbers that you need

Install is easy too

is it weird that i replaced my ambi-temp sensor and my temp is wacky? there is no CEL, just sporadic temps displayed. usually reads 29 degrees F and might go to the ambient, but then spikes to 10's or lower sometimes... rendering my AC useless even on a hot day... wtf

annoying

does anyone know whatsup with this?

temp sensor is totally fine (so i know)

Check the other fender liner

There are two sensors. One in each fender liner. They control different things. I have replaced several on both sides. Heavy spring slush tends to rip the liners off the car and take the senders with it.

Also if the temp is wacky (that is the symptom when the sensor is gone entirely) maybe you need to check for a break in the wire further up the line.

I know this is an old thread BUT I also know that some people may search and find this thread. SEARCH! Yes, I said search  :shhh:

Anyway US models that have the cold weather package have a temp sender in the passenger wheelwell that senses when the defrosters need to be applied for the heatable windshield washer nozzles.

So the one that causes the SES and +122F readings to come out would be from the driver's side wheel well correct?

My ambient air sensor set off my check engine light. Is this normal?
I too have the same exact issue. I went drifting in a snow storm that may have caused this issue.

'Driver's side'?. Well, I'm in the UK, so which driver's side?? I've replaced the sensor and wiring on the right, but still -40 and random numbers usually -2, -20 etc.. It's driving me nuts! It's a brand new BMW temp sensor & plug. And fender, but there's no place on it for the sensor, so I've put it behind the headlight. What's my problem?

You will happy to know that I used search to get here. Answered most of my question. Does anyone know if the cold weather wiring is present in cars without the cold weather package?

I have a new to me 325iT without the cold weather package, the right front lower inner fender cover is damaged from rubbing on the tire, found a wire without its connector hanging in there too. The connector had been worn away by the tire. Other than that there is no sign the sensor was ever there. Pretty sure it is the wire for the sensor from the colors, Green/Black and Green/Yellow.

I do have heated seats but no headlight wash which I think is part of cold weather.

I got this issue too right after some snow.. Went under the car today and was confused because there was a lot of stuff missing.. Entire drivers side liner got ripped out somehow.. Along with my temp sensor.. Finally traced the break further up and snagged a temp sensor from other car gonna solder it and zip tie somewhere at the fender
