I know there is a way to make it blink regardless u have OEM alarm or not.

do you know how to or do I just have to go to the dealer?

yup - you have to have the dealer activate it.

I think it's a premium package thing where you DON'T have to turn the thing to dim the mirror - it's automatic at night and senses the headlights behind you. But for all other E46s you need to manually twist it.

They ALL have the LEDs inside, regardless of alarm or not. The dealer can activate it for you to sync with when you lock your car.

agreed..to get the LED to blink like you have an alarm you have to get it coded by a shop that has the correct computer software that the dealer uses.

Clown Nose Activation...

Dealer can do it for you and so can an Independent Shop with an "Autologic" box:

The "Clown Nose" flashes after you purchase, install and activate your BMW alarm. Did you know that you can have the Nose programmed to flash, and the amber lights blink off/on when you open/close the doors even though the alarm is NOT installed? Here's how:

1) Have your dealer hook up the shop computer to the car.
2) Go to the "Anit-Theft" activation section.
3) Activate the alarm, but uncheck the "DWA" option.

This was tested by at least a dozen people so far, who swear that it works. The shop work order the job was written as: "Program car memory to visual acknowledge when locking/unlocking" :)

exactly
it is called some kind of "visual something"
the car will blink as if it has an alarm, whether its the parking lights blinking when you lock/unlock, or the red LED in the light in the mirror

expect to pay like $100 from the dealer tho, they have to charge you for an hour.......

i love mine btw

that clown nose (red LED) blinks if you have an alarm (when you lock the car)

however, if you have the "clown nose", the dealer can activate it that way it will blink when you lock your car, regardless if you have an alarm or not

also, if you do that activation, your parking lights will flash when you lock/unlock your car

it will blink twice when you unlock it, or once when you lock it (then the clown nose on the mirror blinks)....... "pretending" the alarm is set

anyone have an idea of the cost to get this to activate?

How would I know if my car has the alarm rather than just the visual activation?

And, what is the difference? What security features are there without the alarm and what is added with the alarm?

Thanks for any help. (I always thought everyones clown nose blinked )
The oem alarm comes with motion sensor inside the car on the roof liner, if the car is lifted from the back or front ther is a sensor in the back by the battery and the horn. I think the best way to know if you have an oem alarm is if you lock your doors does it chirp.

how expensive is the OEM alarm? do they have to install the alarm or is it dormant in your car until the dealer programs it? how much installed if anyone has done it. im thinking of getting an alarm and would rather just keep my single key with out going viper or some other brand with a key pad
