My apologies if this has been addressed elsewhere but I couldn't find anything.

How can I positively identify whether my 07/98 328i has a M52B28 engine or a M52TUB28 engine ?

Is there a code in the VIN that I can check ?

I believe from what I have read on this site that the M52 is a SOHC engine whereas the M52TU is a DOHC engine. Is this correct ?

My reason for these questions is that I'd like to retrofit a MFSW but my local dealer doesn't seem particularly interested. From another thread I've read that it's straightforward if your car is fitted with the M52TU engine.

Many thanks,

M52B28 is a DOHC engine, it just doesn't have exhaust cam VANOS (or near as nice of a VANOS setup to work with).

The Intake manifolds look completely differently, along with the rest of the engine.

The E36 came with the M52B28, the E46 with the M52TUB28, but to verify, here are some pics:

S52 (looks the same as an M52B28 with a different plastic cover over the valve cover)

my gosh that is easy to tell apart. one looks like and engine while the other is much more efficient and looks like a Homelink :eeps:
is that a 3 cylinder ?
