M52B28 is a DOHC engine, it just doesn't have exhaust cam VANOS (or near as nice of a VANOS setup to work with).

The Intake manifolds look completely differently, along with the rest of the engine.

The E36 came with the M52B28, the E46 with the M52TUB28, but to verify, here are some pics:

S52 (looks the same as an M52B28 with a different plastic cover over the valve cover)

M52TUB28 (note the different intake manifolds)

my gosh that is easy to tell apart. one looks like and engine while the other is much more efficient and looks like a Homelink :eeps:
is that a 3 cylinder ?

That's great BimmerDude. My engine is the lower image, therefore that's the M52TU right ?

From what I've read on another post from Phelix, that means that the dealer was incorrect and I can retrofit a multi-function steering wheel.

i dont think your steering wheel has anything to do with your engine. its the connectors that you have to have to hook up the switches on the steering wheel, like cruise control, radio,phone, etc

 

All E46s are M52TU or M54s (or S54 in the case of the M)

E36s are M50TU, M52, S50, or S52s.

 

You should be able to install the steering wheel though yes.

I've seen a handful of installs adding cruise control on US spec 323's so I imagine its the same for other markets.

 

Are the heads on the M52TUB28 and M52B28 interchangeable?
