Good, reliable ELM 327 interface for BMW E46 to use with Scanmaster-ELM software?

Greetings to all.

I picked up an ELM 327 on ebay to try with Scanmaster-ELM and after a minute or two, the live data shuts down and says “no data”. Its properly configured and i think its just a bad quality product (not surprising). Does anyone have an ELM 327 that works well specifically with Scanmaster-ELM software?

I have the OBD Fusion app and it works great but i would like something i can work with on my laptop. OCTech sells their Touchscan diagnostic software for windows and looks pretty good and might be an alternative if i cannot get Scanmaster-ELM working properly

Jump on this quick, currently a Lightning deal with $10 off, currently $19.99 with the $10 deal discount and ends in under 2 hours.

This is an OBDLink interface, so most of the OBDLink software is OBDFusion/TouchScan in an OE form and should be included or available for no cost download once you have the interface. Most of the OBDLink interfaces have the key in the interface that will allow the OBDLink software to work with the interface, but often you can use the OBDLink interfaces with different programs as well.

This may effectively include the TouchScan software in a OE form?? I know many years ago before all the Apps and wireless interfaces were available, I purchased something like this and it did include the TouchScan software.

Slight different interface that I purchased a long time ago - https://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=967204

I have the TouchScan software however, I have not used it in a LONG time mainly due to the smart phone Apps. But it was a tool I used to find a number of problems back when there were no real OBDII Apps available.

Thank you jfoj!!! 15 minutes left on the deal. I took advantage and ordered one. I was viewing in ebay and the cheapest was $34.95 so its one great deal indeed!!! I asked a few sellers and they say the OBDlink cable will work with Scanmaster-ELM. Will test it out and see. The interface also includes a diagnostic program called OBDwiz as well.

The OBDLink cable includes a "key" for the OBDWiz software which I recall is what they originally called the TouchScan software when supplied as an OE version.

It has been about 6-7 years since I played with it, but I think I also was given an Evaluation copy of the TouchScan Pro which I played with for a while until the OBDFusion Apps were available.

Interesting. I will take a look at the OBDWiz software.

The Touchscan must be very good but if i can get Scanmaster working or if OBDWiz is to my liking, then i will avoid the expense.

I bought an ELM-327 wifi adapter. Had no problems. I have Torque Pro and OBDFusion on my phone and tablet and AutoDoctor on my laptop. All work fine.

My ELM327 USB adapter connects to Scanmaster, but after a minute or so it just stops working.

Thanks for the link. I will check it out. Which version of the software did you purchase?

One thing you might check is the option on the computer to save power by turning off the USB interfaces.

Usually in the Control Panel, Power Options and you can also check under Device Manager for the Universal Serial Bus controllers, Generic USB Hub, Properties and Power Management. Unselect the option to allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Some computers have multiple Generic USB Hubs that you need to disable power management for each "Hub".

Might be in different locations depending on the OS you are running.

The OBDLink stuff is not ELM based, but rather their own ELM 327 clone. I bought one of their USB cables and it's served me well, but I prefer the BMW specific tools usually. I also bought a Bluetooth LE (Veepeak OBDCheck BLE) dongle and it's been problem free.

The OBDLink / OBD Solutions stuff is interesting because in an email exchange with them one of their engineers seems to think it could be extended to support BMW's ISO 9141 and KWP 2000 variants. This doesn't mean that the OBDLink cables would work with INPA, etc. rather that you could theoretically extend an app like OBD Fusion (or write your own) that would support both OBD and BMW protocols.
