Hi All -

My car has a GM automatic transmission with a green tag. It's tough to read the serial number, but are all GM automatic transmissions interchangeable on the E46?

Can i just buy any used e46 GM trans?

Tranny tag

Petemo,
does your green tag actually shows the number A5S 390R???? Mine does not have such a number. What does your tag say as the place the tranny was built and what is the part and serial #? I assume it says GM HYDRAMATIC TRANNY WITH A # AFTER THAT. Assuming also you have an automatic triptronic tranny.

When I was looking for a replacement tranny, I found some with identical part numbers.

Do you have a steptronic? What is the manufacturing date of your car?

You can either try to find one with the same number, or you can compare part numbers on realoem.com to find a match.
There was a change in 6/99, I suspect that's when they came out with the steptronic.

It's not as complicated as it seems.
There are two types of 5L40E, pre 6/99 and post 6/99.

I have 2000 323i with an 11/99 production, the car has a metal tag located on the driver's side towards the rear of the transmission case with the following information:
GM Part number 96022831.
I SEE YOU ALSO HAVE A GM TRANNY WITH GREEN TAG. Mine says GM part #96042672 and I'm told its equivalent to the A5S-390R OR 5L40-E but nobody can tell me how they bridged from the GM part number to these transmission numbers.
