Hey guys!
I'm planning on buying an E46 325i facelift since at least 6 months, now I gathered up the money and have almost everything set up to hit the road towards Germany to buy a nice one.
I've dug into a lot of aspects of buying a used car, and a lot of aspects of the E46 chassis itself, the 325i engine and I'm pretty confident this is the car that I want. There's only one thing I can't figure out:
Is an M pack 325i worth so much more (mechanically) and should I be looking exclusively for those? Now at this point it's important to point out that we are talking about the European market, so there are significant trim level and build differences. I've found old articles about the trim levels that were used to be sold in Europe:
From the foggy information I gathered, besides the well known cosmetic enhancements, the M pack 1 and 2 also came with "altered suspension geometry", meaning stiffer dampers and springs and lowered ride height for sure, but also different control arms (some saying that these are actually the M3 control arms and suspension elements). The drivetrain, in theory, is identical to the lower trim level SE package, whilst the suspension is borrowed from the American ZHP 330i. Now I could not verify this information so this might not be accurate.
My question to you guys would be, considering the M packs are much harder to find:
1. Disregarding the cosmetic enhancements, is the altered suspension worth the hassle? It's important to mention, that as solid as these cars are, after 15 years, I don't expect the suspension to be in a perfect state, and after a cooling system rebuild and rear subframe mount reinforcement, custom coilovers would be on top of my to-do list. So basically, the question here would be whether a non M-pack suspension with set of quality custom coilovers could be as good as the M pack suspension?
2. Do you know any mechanical or other differences between these 2 trim levels that I have not mentioned?
3. In the case I decide to go with a non M pack vehicle, how good idea would it be to retrofit an M pack body kit, steering wheel etc.? (Ps.: I really love the look of the M pack body kit)
Thank you so much for your answers in advance, I'm really thankful for any suggestions.
nbK.
