Hello

I own a 2004 E46 318 CI. When I bought it 4 years ago it came with cloth seats. A year or so after buying it I sought out some used leather seats from a breakers. They were from a 2001 coupe. I looked up a guide and installed the seats with no issues. Recently I decided I wanted M Sport seats. I bought a set from another breakers, from a 2002 coupe. When I got home and took the seats out of my car I notice something strange with the wiring underneath the drivers side seat. I have attached some pictures below. This is a picture of the new drivers side seat with odd wiring. What is that round yellow connector?

This is a picture of the current passenger side seat. You can see it has the occupancy sensor and the standard yellow box for the cable connector in the body of the car.

What am I to do here? I have no idea what the current wiring under the drivers seat is. Has someone just stripped away the sensor?
I would have assumed that the cabling under any e46 non electric seats would have been standard?
What is the reality of installing the seat without an occupancy sensor and with not airbag sensor attached. Is this dangerous? I know the airbag light will be on but that is not an issue as long as the airbag actually works.

I would appreciate any help.

Cheers

There is no occupancy sensor on the drivers seat, only passenger. It does look like you are just missing the main connector housing for the seat harness to mate with the chassis harness. Just take apart your old seat harness connector and you will see how it integrates. You may want to use the seat belt tensioners from the old seats as they can cause airbag faults if they are faulty.

Something just doesn't look right about the seats. The one without the occupancy sensor looks like it had the forward backward lever on the wrong side. I'm confused, can you take some better overall pictures without cropping out the sides.

Hi Overboost

Thanks for the replies. My apologies for not getting back to you sooner. I have no garage so can only work on the car at the weekend when the weather is decent. Such a day only arrived last Saturday.

I followed your advice. I took the fitted (2001) drivers side seat from my car and sat it next to the newer M-Sport seat (2002) I wanted to fit. The M-Sport seat is the one in the picture above with the funny round yellow connector. I traced the wire from the yellow connector back to the seat belt pre-tensioner. I then removed the seat belt tensioner and the cable.

I then went to the 2001 seat that had all the right parts in place. I could see a cable coming from the seat belt pre-tensioner cable around the underside and into the normal yellow rectangular box. I took the yellow box apart, I could see two cables feeding into it, one from the pre-tensioner and one from another wire which fed under the bottom left corner of the seat. I do not know what this second cable does. I disconnected the unknown cable via a connector and removed the yellow box from the seat, the pre-tensioner and the cable that ran between them. I installed these parts under the M-Sport seat. This went fairly smoothly. I then installed the M-Sport seat into my car. I connected the yellow box under the M-Sport seat to the cable that lives on the car floor. I was not sure what would happen when I started the car, didn't fancy getting a bloody nose from an airbag firing off. I decided to turn the key while standing outside the car. I am happen to say the airbag did not go off and the air bag light did not come on.

I guess that would mean its a success, would you agree?

I drove the car around a few times since and no issues with the airbag light.

My concern now is safey. If the worst happened and I was in a crash would the air bag and seat belt pre-tensioner do its job?

And what was the purpose of the other cable that fed into the yellow box under the seat? I can take some pics of this cable if that would help. The 2001 drivers side seat is just sitting spare now.

Cheers

Yes, I would say success. The other cable is probably for the electric controls or lumbar adjustment on the side of the seat but you could take some pictures and I can try to identify them. If you are worried about the SRS system be assured the system will work properly. That's what the check system is for. If something was not right, the light would be lit. You can always plug into your car with PA Soft 1.4 and go to the SRS catagory and it will show you everything that is active. Again, if something wasn't right, you would see the warning light.
