I went to buy some ATF at the dealer. I specifically asked for ATF for my power steering. So the guy went to the back and brought out CHF. I didn't really understand which part of ATF that he couldn't understand. So I told him that wasn't it and I wanted ATF. So he tried again and brought out ATF D2. I asked him what D2 stood for. But, he didn't know. The experience left me a bit unsure if he gave me the right thing or not.

When I got home, I checked that ATF D2 (81 22 9 400 272) was definitely the right oil. There was no marking of Dexron 3 on the carton, unlike a previous BMW ATF carton I used. So my question is: what is the difference between ATF D2 and ATF Dexron 3 ?

I have a 3/4 litre of Dexron 3 in my PS system. Is that the wrong oil to use ? On cold starts the PS pump cavitates very briefly. But the reservoir level looks OK. So I am thinking maybe the Dexron 3 is causing the problem because it's the wrong oil ?

Why is it so specific for Power Steering fluid? All it does is lube the pump and cycle back out? Why would D2 or D3 be so important and why won't any generic ATF fluid work?

Would the wrong ATF mess up the system?

BMW Of Manhattan just told me any fluid would be find for the Power Steering. However for the actual Transmission you have to be careful and VERY specifc as to what you use.

The BMW dealerships do not sell ATF.

Look on the filler cap to decide if you need ATF or CHF, it will tell you.

TIS manual states ATF is part number 8122 9400 272 Trade name "BMW automatic transmission fluid" . This equates to BMW ATF D2 (not D3) and so D2 is the correct stuff - perhaps D doesn't stand for Dexron in this instance, seeing as Dexron is a fluid originally made for GM.

CHF part number is 8122 9407 758 trade name Pentosin CHF 11s.
