Hi,

I have the 4 spoke, lame looking steering wheel with all the buttons on it, stereo, phone, cruise etc etc and I want to change it to one of the nicer looking 3 spoke ones, possibly with an aluminium insert. Does anyone know if my current airbag with fit into a 3 spoke wheel; and moreover will the buttons on the 3 spoke wheel work in my car? I guess there is just some kind of loom it plugs into?

you will need a circular airbag (your current airbag should be more of a square shape) so you will not be able to reuse this. Buying a circular airbag (new/used) to fit the m3 wheel or even a sports wheel will cost you a good chunk of change. be ready to pay a lot if you want to upgrade this part.

hey buddy.. as I just did the swap on my 2000 328ci, I feel i could help.

As for, whether or not it's possible to do, it is definitely in the cards. However you will need both the wheel and airbag which will run between 650-1000 used depending on what type of deal you get. Do NOT buy new unelss you absolutely have to as you will get raped price wise

Regarding the state 1 and stage 2 talk, I have been told that, for the time being, if I get in an accident, the whole airbag will deploy (which is way better than it NOT deploying of course). The only difference is that in a stage 2, it has two bags, and only one typically goes off in a "low impact" accident and both go off if in a serious accident. Our stage 1 setup just will fire both of the airbags regardless of the impact with the software built into the car.

That said, I can (and will) get the car flashed with updated softare that will fix this (and you likely will have to get it flashed after doing the install anyway as the airbag light WILL go off when putting the wheel on a 99 or 00).

Hope all that helps.

That should be the least of your worries. That is the easy part. Trust me, often they reflash your ECU at the dealership when you go in for service and dont tell you. It is only a software update, as happens from time to time.

DO IT!!!! :str8pimpi
