What's wrong with Victor Reinz? I've used them for years and they work fine.

 

The genuine I think is of updated material, some said viton but that has been disproved. Although I think there is a viton variant somewhere.
So I'd say genuine from fcp, for the lifetime warranty.
But, it should be noted that the elring will be fine too, for 40k miles

Who wants to change the Elring gasket after 40k? ;-)

Oh, not only for gaskets , you can even return your used oil and they give you new. Although I wouldn't treat them like this

 

Looks like I'll be buying the Genuine BMW one from ECS Tuning because they are cheaper than FCP Euro (although it comes with the washers and oil filler gasket).

I'm going to follow the below video to change it.

I smell burning oil and noticed oil by the exhaust manifold so it's time to change the valve cover gasket. My car has 258k and I got it with 106k 8 years ago and never had to change the gasket until now.

What is the best gasket to get for it?

OE Genuine on this one. 120K miles and 8+ years since I changed it and counting. Zero leaks.

Wouldn't be a bad idea to knock out the oil filter housing gasket in the same day. Inexpensive and could save you a lot of cleanup time down the road since this one makes a big mess if left leaking.

 

Is OE Genuine the BMW Genuine one or is there any brand that made it for BMW? I have an oil housing filter gasket but i haven't replaced it yet. Looks messy. lol

 

I'm pretty sure elring is the oem supplier of most of the gaskets but I could be wrong if someone can confirm it? Also oil filter housing isn't too messy, just open the oil filter cap the night before so all the oil drains back down to the sump and you don't have too much spillage.

The last set of GENUINE gaskets we bought for a M54 from the dealer were produced by Mahle. (The piston people)

 

Time to pull the motor and do a complete refresh!

Get with @Archbid and get the m56 valve cover. You'll never have to change a valve cover gasket again.

I decided to go with the Elring valve cover gasket kit from ECS Tuning. Should get it by next Monday so I'll let everyone know what I think.

 

I have a genuine BMW gasket for sale on eBay. If anyone is interested, enter the item # in the search field: 193874469545. I no longer need it since I sold my 330i.

 

My next project, just noticed I had a leak from the VC after doing my oil change, plugs and coils.

 

I'd like to add in that the felpro valve cover gasket at advanced or autozone has been working well for me. Not my preferred choice as its not oe and its a looooooot more expensive. But it works if you need it right then and there and are in a pinch.

 

I haven't used a Fel-Pro gasket in a long time. Truth be told they were one of the first to step up and produce a better sealing solution to fix the ubiquitous leak prone area on Chevy V8 small block intake manifold gaskets, right where the coolant crosses over from one cylinder head to the other (both front & back) with an improved gasket labeled "Print O Seal".
This was heretofore unheard of and has the all too familiar (NOW) bead of silicone around the perimeter.

I have seen Fel-Pro VC gaskets on the M54 engine. I also think that they offer a lower cost/higher cost line.
I bemoan the stupid blue centers in the half moons though....

 

Felpro user here for an M54B30 E53, about 40k miles now .The rest of fleet are Elring since i got them from FCP. Ive changed the Elring just because it was 4 yrs old,they did not leak and was still supple, this Felpro ( still not leaking )is coming out soon and will be replaced with an Elring.

Why list FCP they sell more than ECS for the same brand?

 

Free replacements w/ FCP. For someone who plans on keeping the car for a long time, the extra $15 is worth it.

 

Someone installed a VR gasket wrong, then posted that it was the gaskets fault. In true forum fashion people took it and ran with it.
