After 1 year of running macht schnell filter, back to stock! [Mini Review]

1 year ago I bought EAS's "E46 M3 stage 1 intake charge kit", the kit arrived and installation was easy. The macht schnell filter was of the oiled type and fit OK but not as good as the OEM. Still I was sure I was doing an improvement to my cars intake efficiency :tsk:

Slowly over time my car lost power under 3k rpms, had very rough startup on a cold engine (sitting overnight), and throttle response/accuracy was dulled. I didn't notice this since it developed slowly over time, still I was sure my intake was less restrictive so it "must be better" for the car.

Fast forward to last week, after reading so much about problems with oil based intake air filters causing startup issues I decided to swap my OEM air filter back in.

First impressions were holy crap!:yikes: The car starts up effortlessly and has a nice smooth idle. No "bucking" of the rpm's up/down as it fights to maintain a smooth idle! It never ran so smooth, I was convinced. Now after driving the car for a week I have noticed other improvements too. Firstly the accuracy of the throttle has improved greatly. Shifting between gears is now effortless to produce a nice smooth shift. Before I had to put much more effort into a smooth shift . Even more, power under 3k rpm's has improved greatly, before it felt "dead" it kinda just sat there till it got to 3k rpm's now it hauls ass! I've also done several runs to redline (which I did on a regular basis with the macht schnell) to see if the top end has lost its oomph and it feels just as great as before.

FYI I'm still running the EAS intake boot from their kit but am now considering reverting that back to stock too!

When I bought the EAS stage 1 kit I thought I was improving my cars intake, in the end it made it much worse in several areas. I purposely didn't buy a whole new aftermarket intake (AFE, K&N, etc) after hearing how they all LOSE power, hence the decision to mod the stock box with EAS's kit. In the end I believe the stock airbox is the best setup for the E46 M3.

did you ever clean your MAF that might have been part of the prroblem. since i run a oiled filter i clean it every oil change and never seen and problems similar to yours. with the filter and boot you do loose a cupple of ponys in the low end but gain midrange and up top wich is the most important. if it feels dull DOWNSHIFT

currently running the macht schnell intake boot and a K&N drop in filter. Never experienced what you are experiecing. After I installed the intake elbow by MS, I noticed a change in idle, MPG, and sound (for the better). My guess is for you to clean the MS filter and your MAF and you will be surprised how much it actually works. There has been proven dyno and test results that the K&N drop in filter and MS filter with a silicion intake boot has increased performance and MPG for these cars. The stock air filter is a POS. It's pretty much a piece of paper.

Thanks for the review but another thing to ask is if the Macht Schnell filter was ever cleaned? Part of the cure could also be from having a new filter in the car.

Before you guys go facepalming away at least have an understanding of all the different variables a higher flowing panel filter introduces into a highly calibrated MAF system.

I also clean my MAF with CRC brand MAF cleaner every 10k miles (every other oil change).

It's easy for these symptoms to go unnoticed since they develop slowly over time as the ECU tries to calibrate to the filter (IMO go out of calibration).

Take the challenge, put a OEM filter in for a week and if you don't notice any improvement at all then you may have a point. Till then I have real world results and most of you are getting butt-hurt that your aftermarket investments may really be crap!

and so do the proven dyno test results. I am not "butt-hurt" by any means. Just saying I have done both the OEM filter/ elbow and the aftermarket options. Just giving you our opinions on why we think your findings may be so. That's all.

I think this guy is spot on. Everyone is jumping to the conclusion that the oil dirtied the maf, but the OP never cleaned the MAF when going to OEM. Therefore.... the gain the OP is seeing is because his old filter was getting dirty and the OEM was new. If he had put in a new oiled filter he would have a bigger smile.

on the eas site, it says the macht schnell filter is washable so how is that an oiled type? from my understanding when i bought it you don't need to oil it...correct me if i'm wrong....plus i installed the elbow and macht schnell filter probably 5k or more ago and i just pulled out my maf to clean it and it looked clean so if it was oiled to begin with, it would be dirty?? but it wasn't

I love my AFE filter and elbow and you can hear it as well :4ngie:!!!If you want to run this type of set-up ,then you must do better maintenance intervals to make sure that the filter and MAF stays clean. The AFE should be oiled and left to sit ( allows the oil to set in the filter better and more evenly)for 12hours minimum. If you like OEM then drive OEM and you will never worry ever again:p!!!!!Cheers Dennis
