A/C went out, started smoking from front passenger side

When I went to work my A/C was working fine. A shift later, I got in my car, let it warm up, then turned on the AC, but noticed it never started blowing cold, then after a while of the A/C blowing hot, I saw smoke. I turned off the car, popped the hood and saw a lot of smoke coming from the AC Compressor? I***8217;m not too familiar with A/C systems so any help? I***8217;m guessing my clutch seized or my compressor went out.

Clutches more often fail disengaged, which is to say the clutch is not magnetized and therefore isn't running the compressor. It sounds like your compressor clutch is engaged, but the compressor itself is seized and therefore toast. You don't mention the smell of the smoke, but it's probably the burning rubber of the compressor drive belt trying to turn a stationary compressor.

I'd suggest replacing the compressor, evacuating the system (making sure that it holds vacuum for >30 minutes) and recharging with R134a WITHOUT the dye.

Burnt rubber = fried a/c drive belt from a seized compressor. You'll have to replace both.

You test for system vacuum with an a/c manifold gauge set and a vacuum pump. They are essential for any a/c work if you are going to DIY.

There are multiple videos on Youtube detailing how to replace an E46 compressor, and many others showing how to use a manifold gauge set to diagnose a/c problems.
