Yes, you are right. For some reason the 2001 MK60 has a very high failure rate. Get a used one from a newer E46 (2004+ is best), and we can code it to your car.

Pardon if I've got this wrong, but,
aren't there 2 versions for 2001- the early (pre- August)
that uses analog yaw sensors and accelerometers,
and the later, much more common version that uses
a combined sensor that communicates digitally?

Yeah, there are several factors in getting a correct replacement: ASC vs DSC, Euro vs USA market, wheel speed sensor style, etc.
There may not be one available from a newer production date.
OP obviously needs to do the homework on all that.

I would only replace the control module and leave your ABS pump installed.
Once the new module is installed I can remotely code it to your car. PM me if you need that.
