While working through and learning the meaning of the GM/SA/VN codes on my 2001 325Ci, I noticed that the VN indicates I have a BMW Business CD43, but the unit in the dash definitely looks like a CD54.
According to the tables in NCS Expert, my build date (May 2001) was just after BMW switched to the CD54. Has anyone else seen this discrepancy?

I haven’t experienced any obvious functional problems, but it is weird.

I ask because I am adding a Bluebus soon and want to make sure everything is ready on the vehicle.

The only way to be sure what head unit is in the car is to remove it and take a picture of the label.

How to remove an E46 head unit:
Tools:
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • trim removal tool or a thin piece of plastic
1. Remove the horizontal trim piece to the right of the head unit
2. Remove the horizontal trim piece to the left of the head unit
3. Remove 2 phillips screws
4. Gently pull the head unit out.

Interesting. I do have the original manual. It is a Blaupunkt BP0273.
So, it looks like CD43 is right if I am reading everything correctly.

Unless the head unit was swapped with a later model (made by Alpine), it’s a Blaupunkt CD43.

A bit of trivia: Blaupunkt means blue spot or dot in German. This is because the guy making radios before WW1 tested the radios and would put a blue dot of paint on the radios that performed the best. Buyers would ask for radios with the Blaupunkt.
