A 245/40 on an 8.5" is fine, but the tire is too tall for a non-M E46. Go with a 235/40.

235 gives your rim a little more protection from curb rash...
You can run 225's but the wheel will not look very filled out. 235 looks the best in my opinion.

you can get 255/35/18... that's the the 18x8.5 M V-spoke wheels come stock with. the overall tire diameter is perfect
