Edit: Well, it***8217;s not free on Amazon Prime video. You have to purchase a subscription to Motor Trend TV to watch it. Bummer, I was looking forward to catching up!

I was disappointed when Edd left as well but the new guy Ant is OK.

That is interesting - Marc Priestely from F1 fame (engineer on McLaren during the Alonso/Hamilton years - known as F1Elvis - https://www.youtube.com/user/F1Elvis/featured ) was shooting for the show over the last couple of months. I assume it is the same show...

 

Watched this last night; great fun. I'll only say Marc Priestely DOES make an on-camera appearance

 

Saw it too. My favorite part was Ant in the back seat with his face pushed up against the window while the M3 was being pushed around

 

So I have a question: Would it have been more affordable to just replace the SMG with a used Manual rather than convert the SMG to Manual? It was interesting to learn that converting can be done but it seemed like a lot of work. Also, is the SMG pump not something that can be rebuilt?

 

Mike had no desire to rebuild the SMG. He specifically wanted to convert it to a manual because in his words "will increase the resale value 30%".

Converting the SMG avoids the cost of purchasing the 6 speed transmission, especially when you consider you already have one. According to Ant, the existing transmission was in very good condition. He didn't even have to replace the clutch.

 

The rear subframe came up but Ant never even looked for cracks and no mention of the rod bearing issue. I wasn't aware the s54 has a different style Vanos, looked nothing like the DIYs I've seen.

The info for the episode (Dish) indicated that the sub-frame had already been repaired. I gathered that in that stack of receipts in the trunk, Mike found the repair bill for the sub-frame repair.

 

Q: the car is confused .. it thinks there is a major problem .. so what is the cure?
A: reflash is the cure .. reflashing means reprogramming .. don't screw it up

sounds familiar.

They also almost never mention the mileage in the cars they rehab. As we all know miles on the clock makes a huge difference on a cars value. I did notice a view of the dash in one shot that shows that this car had 115k miles on it.

yep bad editing. too much time on the vanos. not enough on the subframe.

but the scene in the parking garage was great. i assume that "paul" was not a real prospective buyer but a professional driver?

 

ok finally saw this on Spectrum cable this week. it’s also on demand. interesting they say manual automatically gives it a 30% higher value. I knew it was more sought after but that’s pretty solid. that M3 was pretty clean, didn’t like the cf vinyl wrap dash trim nor yellow painted stock calipers. removed intake but left aftermarket race muffler?
seeing how they got $18k for that makes me happy value is increasing again. my 6MT slicktop should do well well time comes.

the shop they used was Lang Racing, Andrew and Jonathan are great guys. :thumbsup:

 

lol, my ‘03 325i is a slicktop. But, its because there are zero options on the car. Manual, 325i, that’s it. I do like that there is no sunroof though. The sunroof on my other car is manual and i am way ok with that. I just cant bring myself to call it a slicktop unless it had the hopped up motor and all the other options to go with.

 

I just watched the episode and they did a great job. They had a clean version to start with but I think the M3 was made to be a manual car. I***8217;ve been a fan of the show for years and was disappointed when Ed left but Ant is very good.

 

I chuckled at the "trade secret" bit. I have a lot of respect of Lang, but they wouldn't be able to do that programming if it wasn't for the community figuring all that out. But I know pressing a few buttons doesn't really make for good TV.

Just bought a SMG M3 and that was my first thought- want to swap in a 6speed.
Need to catch up on Maintenance. PO said she sat for 5 years or so.

 

I sw it on YouTube - good show though I thought it was based in the UK. They mentioned the subframe but did not say the condition of it when they got it to the shop - willing to assume it was checked and was ok. I believe you can see the mileage when the guy who bought it started it up before buying it. From memory it was 114K miles.... Could have been 140K miles but I remember thinking it was fairly low for the age.

 

Yes, I noticed the 114K also but it looked to be in great condition. The show was based in the UK but they seem to have relocated to LA a few seasons ago.
