I understand the basics of how a car's suspension works, but to be honest I don't know what coilovers do? Can you please enlighten me and tell me why they are good?

Coilovers are simply a spring set with an adjustable height, usually turned by a special tool.

Yes, that does help, thanks. Presently I have non-sport springs with Bilstein HD shocks/struts and the ride is too high. I presume coils would solve that? Do they usually effect ride quality?
