i drive a 97 e39 its been acting up lately
a few months back i recently had my o2 sensor + radiator + water pump replaced after my car blew up during a trip in the mountains .
my problem is sometimes when im idling my temp will rise and when i start to drive it'll drop back to normal . also when i shut off the car i can hear these popping noises like a bunch tiny bb's are flying everywhere, kinda like when you make popcorn except its metal. i think it happens when im driving too just that i cant hear it as much . any clue ? thanks

You need to bleed your cooling system

Your in traffic over heating issue could be caused by a few thing.

- Your thermostat
- Defective water pump
- You have air bubble in cooling system. Need to bleed them out
- Your engine fan or vicous fan is not working
- Your radiator is clogged up with leaves and sand in between the fins robbing your heat transer capability.

The worst case would be blown head gasket.

I would pay lot of attention to bleed the air bubble first.
Cheers
Alex
