Weighing options for a new (or rebuilt) driveshaft - where to buy?

After replacing my CSB and flex disc, the issue I was expediting still isn***8217;t gone. I thought I noticed some play in the rear u joint on my car (***8216;02 325i auto 4 door) and I guess I was right.
Ive been getting a shudder when accelerating through 20-30 under moderate accel and a grumbling around 60ish. That sounds like it***8217;s coming from the rear.

There***8217;s a bunch of site that sell the shaft rebuilt, and is love to gear experiences w/ each.

Bimmerworld has it for 650 after core charge
Buyautoparts .com has for 300 rebuilt, or 300 new ***8212; how***8217;s this possible?
Same with wholesaleimportparts
Dorman runs around 600
And the driveshaft specialists of Texas are around 400 or so rebuilt.
Brand new is over 1k.

Why should I not go for one of the cheaper ones? As long As it works?

Would love to hear everyone***8217;s experiences!

I had mine rebuilt last year at Driveshaft Specialists in Texas. Call them and talk to them ahead of time. My experience was that they do great work and are great people. They didn***8217;t have one on hand to send me because I have the SSG transmission and I have a CV joint back near the diff. They emailed me a shipping label. I shipped it to them on a Tuesday and it was back on my front porch on Wednesday of the following week.

I got ~15k miles on it and it is smooth as new, and I***8217;ve had the car since it was new. I don***8217;t think you will go wrong with them. It seems like driveshafts are their only business.

Interesting. How was shipping time? I***8217;m mainly weighing them against the wholesaleimports place, as they***8217;re the only two that I can find reviews for in the e46 world. Wholesaleimports no longer sells the refurbished ones, or so their site seems to display. Only ***8220;new***8221;, but I***8217;m not quite sure what that means.

i am thinking about this also. the best driveshaft (for me, rear driveshaft on xi) will be remanufactured from beyer in chandler az. they are the best and that’s what you’ll get when you order from good outfits like bimmerworld.

nothing wrong with dorman. they are new and a bit cheaper than reman. also have serviceable u-joints. i wish someone here would report their experience with dorman.

i could get a new driveshaft cheap from getbmwparts. that’s actually what the track mechanic suggests. but it would have the locked in u-joint.

I'm new to the E46 Forum, but I have an 2006 E90 325i as my daily driver. Three years ago I had the same noises in my E90 and finally chased it down to the driveshaft. It was at 325,000 miles. The runout spec on the u-joints is .004". I had replaced the center bearing about 75,000 miles earlier, so I figured the u-joints finally wore beyond spec. I used Driveshaft Specialists of Texas as well. The rebuilt driveshaft was of great quality and has been in over 55,000 miles at this point.

I highly recommend Driveshaft Specialists as the source of supply for a rebuilt BMW driveshaft. Their packaging is top notch making return of the core easy as pie. They had mine in stock.

Following up here with a list of the symptoms to make sure I'm not crazy, and that it is actually the shaft. I changed the Guibo & csb (correctly) last week

25-30 MPH shudder under moderate to hard acceleration
55-60 MPH "growl" / vibration that echos through the cabin & is more noticeable when letting off throttle.
60-79 MPH is fairly smooth

I THINK I felt play in the shaft when I had everything apart last week, but should've gotten a video. Going to try to today.

wholesaleimportparts.com is the Texas place.

I've use it to replace the entire driveshaft in my E39 M5 2 years ago, works perfect. A friend has done this THREE separate times to his 03 530i, and each time had issues. Turns out the MORON shop that installed it each and every time F'd up the orientation of the Guibo bolts and it exploded. DO IT YOURSELF BROS!

Before you buy a driveshaft, maybe take a picture of your guibo and post it? Many have been put on incorrectly (one bolt off) and that's enough to give you your symptoms, which symptoms could rip apart your csb within a year.

It's really hard to explain...but a picture is worth a thousand words.

This is the exact place I used. Came with self-addressed label for return shipping of my old driveshaft so I could get the core back. You just cannot beat the price of these professionally rebuilt units. Buy guibo elsewhere, it's much cheaper.

Kept seeing both them & driveshaft specialist recommended, but went w/ the latter, since they supposedly are super great customer service & use the same process as BMW, welding the U-joints

wholesale didn't have any rebuilt shafts, only new, so I'm find sending my old back (for free) w/ the core charge.

Already got a new guibo on the car last weekend, from FCPEuro, so that'll stay.

I know this is an old thread, but I feel it's important to add my two cents. I have a 2003 330xi 5speed with front and rear driveshafts from Turner Motorsport. DO NOT BUY THESE. They have been nothing but headaches. As soon as they were installed, there was a vibrational grumble at 60 MPH, but I could feel something off at speeds much lower. The car just... road much worse. I had both driveshafts installed professionally. When I had the removed again for inspection and brought them to a driveshaft specialist, they said there was nothing they could do balance-wise - the joints had over 40 thousandths of an inch of play in them, and these were obviously acting up since day one. The driveshaft shop said that who ever manufactured them had no idea what they were doing. I hope I can return them to ECS Tuning (I bought them through there because they had free shipping).

Anyways, thank you for this thread. I will be purchasing new drivehshafts from Driveshaft Specialist of Texas. In case anyone is curious, I called them and they quoted me $345 for the front driveshaft on my Xi (the kind without the flex disc; applicable to manual and automatic cars from 2003 and below if I recall).
