Cliff Notes at the bottom.


I know a lot of us don't ever inspect rsm's on the regular basis unless your car is gutted most of the time or if you are making adjustments a lot.

I wanted to post a warning to FK owners to check their RSM's often as mine were shot in less than 1 year use and 7k miles of driving. I've never had rsm's go out as fast as these.
Note: this was a daily driver for the wife with no auto-x or DE days whatsoever.

I only discovered this because I was readjusting the dampening rates for the winter.

I discovered that one is barely hanging on to some rubber while the rubber bushing on the other side is completely torn off from the metal collar itself.





I've been told replacements are over a month away. The OTS(off the shelf) OEM units will not work with the FK's since it has a larger diameter piston size as I've discovered.

I've contacted ECS Tuning and a couple people were helpful but nothing they can do except recommend me to the head guy over there which I have yet to hear back from.

At this point, I can't recommend FK CO's to future owners if they don't want to worry about future RSM issues due to these points:
1. FK uses non standard rear shock piston diameters incompatible with OEM mounts
2. FK seems to use a harder rubber compound that is less compliant and flexible than OEM leading to premature wear

Not feeling so great in the fact that this is a daily driver that my wife uses to drive our 3 and 18month old around and we plan on doing some holiday traveling.

I'm hoping I can get some resolution before something happens and will update accordingly.

Thats your RSM's fault not the coilovers.

^^^ Oh that changes things. Just curious, but what set of coilovers did you get? I was contemplating getting FKs but want to make sure I can use my choice of RSM if this is the case. Sorry about the problems.

I currently have the FK Sport Editions. I bought them about a year ago(at full retail :sad) so I'm not sure if the materials or manufacturing of the RSM's have changed since then.

Bottom Line: if you use FK Coilovers, you gotta use their RSM's which may or may not be available when you need them the most.

The Bilstein B16 Coilover (w/ Electronic Ride Control) also uses a larger diameter hole on the rear shock mount (12mm vs. 10mm). Turner sells a 12mm version.

Update: Did some digging and measured the FK's to be 12mm and as stated, the Bilstein B16 and some Koni's use the 12mm shafts too.

I found Turner Motorsports, Rogue Engineering, and AKG Motorsports to carry aftermarket 12mm RSM's.

Bottom Line: If you don't want to hassle with checking the condition of your FK RSM's every few months, expect to budget ~$100 extra for aftermarket 12mm RSM's in the purchase and be done with it.

Still haven't heard back from ECS Tuning with a resolution yet...

What do you mean by resolution? Buy good aftermarket RSM's, I have the Turner ones in std diameter and they seem to be well made and working fine.

FK CO's come with their own RSM's and their entire system has a Lifetime Warranty on them. Resolution meaning warranty claim.

Ideally when something has a lifetime warranty, one would expect replacement in a reasonable time period and one shouldn't need to buy other alternate parts to compensate. "Ideally"...

I bought fk highsports and then bought RE RSM's no complaints so far :woot:

You can swap your old rear shocks in a matter or minutes, you dont even need to jack the car up, so you can go holiday traveling.

Then make whoever sold you this product pay for a replacement. Dont take no for an answer.

Has nothing to do with brand - has everything to do with setup and stiffness.

I'm not sure what you mean by this but I do know the FK supplied RSM's are junk regardless of setup or stiffness.
Interesting - good call. I made the statement under the assumption the OP used OE bushings. Either way, RSMs of that design don't last long at all, especially with the additional load.

So, OP, what RSMs are you using?
