(VOE) Vacuum operated exhaust

As of now I am running headers and a muffler delete (with resonators still in place) and I have to say I absolutely love the sound. Especially at high RPMs, it freakin screams. Not to mention how much quicker the car revs and how much harder it pulls in the upper range. :D The one thing I don’t like so much is how the car is loud, ALL THE TIME. In an attempt to keep the noise down I hooked the vacuum baffle in the tailpipe back up and it did help some. I’m thinking of picking up another vacuum baffle from the BMW junkyard (Al Rudd auto parts) and installing it. Possibly moving both valves farther forward in the exhaust. :hmm: I’m not entirely sure if it’s even practical to do. It would be pretty awesome if the valves increased back pressure enough to get that low end torque and open up at 3,000 rpm so you still get that wicked top end. Before I even attempt this, has as anyone else messed around with VO exhaust or electric cutouts on their E46?

So wait a minute...you removed the muffler and the cats and are now complaining that the car is loud? Put the bastard back in and problem solved.

As far as your question goes, I'm not sure. Would the vacuum be enough to open close both lines? Also, the amount of backpressure might be too much.
haha, yess that would solve the problem but I LOVE the high RPM sound, just not the drone at cruising speed. I bought another vacuum valve tip so Ill get that welded on and see how it works.

What about a different muffler than the OEM one? There are tons to choose from out there.
So you want to close off both pipes? You know the valve stays closed Untill a specific rpm range right?
Too much back pressure can cause your exhaust valves to burn and it also makes the cylinder head run hotter. Granted, with the cats deleted and extra muffler deleted it would help with that issue. I agree that adding aftermarket mufflers might give you the sound you want with less drone. Magnaflow and Dynomax make good mufflers.

yes exactly why i want the valves. quiet at lower RPM, screamer at high RPM. best of both worlds.

Im getting the valve tip welded on in the morning. hopefully it gives methe desired results.

If the valve tips dont work Im going with the magnaflow muffler. used ones are dirt cheap. Right now I have aftermarket headers without cats and a muffler delete so theres verrrrrrrrryyyyy little backpressure.

I am referring to if you were to add more exhaust valve/flap assemblies. I know on my other motorcycle and VW engines, the exhaust makes a HUGE difference in head and valve temps. It can kill an engine in no time when plugged.
Just put the stock muffler back on, get an electric cutout, and flip a switch whenever you want to be loud.

done.
