what is up with all of these vehicles that have over 200, 230, 250 and so on horse power.

I mean, my bimmer has 194 HP, and it can beat most of those cars that have this high horse power, I mean, why do they put in all this horse power but it doesn't do shyit all. They brag about it on tv as if it is so amazing, but in fact, its just BS horsepower.

even the "yah zoom zoom zoom" kid has 200 HP in that little ugly mini van.

eww!

it's all about torque

if the dudes in the other cars knew how to drive their cars then they would have beat you hahahaha:D

Well, BS HP #'s are one thing, but cars could actually make that at the crank and not be faster than you. There are lots of variables (weight, drivetrain, etc.)

not to mention different gearing and the car may be designed for a whole different purpose.

A 300 hp Lexus GS430 is not made for drag strip racing of course...rather a combination of quickness of the line and effortless highway cruising...and pulls it off wonderfully...especially with the automatic tranny. It's not desgined to be a really "sporty" car.

BMW engineers are drivers first. Everything else is second. Not to say engineers from other manufacturers aren't, BMW's engineers just take it to a different level.

You said it! When I see those ACCORD and MAZDA guys posting flywheel figures, I just flip them this little reply below:

True The dream, also remember that horsepower isn't everything. A car with 200 hp weighing 3200lbs will eventually be faster than a car with 250 hp weighing 3700lbs. If you do the math the horsepower per pound is more on the 200hp than the 250hp car. Also cars like bmws which don't use turbos engineer the transmission gear ratios very well by spreading power across all gears and with a fast accelration.

I do think that with the 350 Z, you really get your "bang for the buck"
No doubt, $ for $ it is better than the M3, hmm...

I would venture to say that $ for $ its at a Z-06 Level.

But then again, some people have more $'s than others...
I still would get the M over the Z.

i think the infinity g35 is the worst looking car in there line well next to the z

its just funny looking
also motor trend said that the g35 was better than the 330ci
but the 330ci wasnt optioned out like the g35 was
they also gave it higher points for being able to hit a higher speed then the 3 series

i would like them to test them again now that bmw has a 6 speed in the 330 :ben:

Its all about the flat tourque curve...pulling from start to finish instead of for 1/4 second at 3000 rpms.
P-Funk has it right.

Horsepower wins arguments, TORQUE wins races!!

Motor Trend is the only mag that said that. All the other mags just stated that it's a cheaper alternative to the individual who doesn't want to, or can't shell out the funds for a 330ci. Both cars perform the same! And yes the 330ci is "supposed to be" limited at 128mph, but again, I was clocked at 138 in my stock 330ci by a CHP radar gun, so I know that not to be fact.....at least not on all 330ci's. 6-speed is just a selling gimmick!

Most people didn't do their physics homework. To get yourself off the line fast you want a hell of a lot of torque, not horsepower. Horsepower is usually a better indication of the top speed potential of the car. Now since HP and Torque are related to eachother (which is why they always equal each other at one point on a dyno graph), you can make the argument that hp is a good indication of acceleration ability because it is related to torque directly (and vice versa), but if you want to be correct, you would know that it's torque you should be worried about.
