Hello, recently I've replaced my Valvetronic motor on my N42B18, since then the car will not start with the motor plugged in. I've got a decent scanner and it gives me the option to learn/adapt the motor, but one of the steps tells me to turn Terminal 15 OFF, wait for the main relay to drop out, then turn Terminal 15 On. I've tried to do some research and I cannot figure out what Terminal 15 is? Has anyone on here ever done it?

Thanks!

The vvt is designed to reset at ignition on. Did you turn the shaft (using the Allen key slot in the centre back of the motor) as you reinstalled it so it screws onto the cogs? You will feel it pulling itself in. Then you can tighten the Tory bolts that hold it. You cannot just force it in, it will jam on the cogs and if it doesn***8217;t move freely at ignition on that might be your issue.

Yes - unplug the harness and unscrew it as you are removing and screw it back on as you are installing. Re-attach harness. Being precise (exact same number of turns) isn't important here as the VVT motor will do a reset when you turn on Ignition - just turn the ignition on for about 20 secs then off. The VVT will have gone end to end and reset itself (if it is working correctly).

Do you have a scan tool for BMW specific modules (I.e. BMW Scanner, INPA etc) Are you getting any VVT errors?

I wasn’t sure whether you had to unscrew it or not as I’ve always just pulled them out and moved the cog along with it, but always made sure it went back on in the same place on the cog. I have a decent scanner that lets me adjust the motor and it tells me that the motor is currently in limp mode. It’s definitely up to the job as it can also do all sorts of coding.

What is the scan tool? What are the error codes for the vvt module? Any DME codes too?

If there are no vvt errors I don't think the vvt module is the source of your problem. It would be nice to see a full scan of all modules and their error codes if any.

Edit: a little more background might be helpful. How***8217;s did this manifest. How did you first come to think if I remove the vvt motor maybe it***8217;ll turn over?

I’ll have to get back to you about the name of the scanner as I don’t remember ? and there is no vvt codes, I’m only seeing that the motor is in limp mode when I go into its status. The problem is the motor worked until I tried to replace it for another one, and by then the ecu had forgotten the motor and now I’m struggling to get them out of limp mode. If I unplug the motor the car will start but does not rev up.

Got it running! I timed the engine up again as I thought it might have been a little off, took the plugs out and dried them as they were a little wet from all the cranking, went into the ecu, and done the valvetronic motor learn, and she fired up! Runs smooth and quiet as ever

how do you time the engine to the valvetronic system , i have the same problem but the shaft got moved whilst the motor was being changed . it now starts cold but dies straight away then has no compression untill it's left for a while
