Trigger wire for backup camera - in dash

After searching this forum and others for a suitable trigger wire to activate the backup camera on my new aftermarket Pioneer head unit, I wanted to pass along to all here a wire that worked for me. I did not want to do like others did and run a long wire all the way to the back of the car and tie into the reverse lights - why do that if you can access a suitable wire in the dash?

Note that when installing a backup camera, you need a 12v source of power to power the camera itself, you need a ground wire point, and on aftermarket head units, there is a "trigger wire" that tells your head unit to display the rear camera video when you shift into reverse.

Another member here advised that there is a black module above the fuse block above the glovebox in the dash that has some blue/yellow wires, and said that "any of them seem to work". I got my meter out, grounded the black lead, and poked into the insulation of these wires in that module (which is a bitch to get out, and a bigger bitch to get back IN to the slots it latches into).

As you will see in my attached pictures, one of the blue/yellow wires did not provide 12v when reverse was engaged, but the photo shows the one that DOES (at least in my car it does). So, that is the one I tapped my reverse wire into.

I advise using an accessory 12v source of power for the camera itself. You want the camera head powered up full time while the ignition key is in the accessory or RUN position. I would not tie it to the car's reverse lights, because this could add delay / latency that would delay the camera signal when you shift into reverse. You want that camera head powered up and to pop up the picture as soon as you shift into reverse. Even still, some head units have a bit of a delay before the picture appears, which we can't help.

Maybe this tip will help someone here.

In this post, I point out the wire I used to trigger the backup camera operation in the head unit. I'm not sure what you are asking here. I am sure you can find the blue/yellow wires throughout the car that could potentially be used, but this location is close to the head unit and easy to wire.

Accessory power for backup camera, found...

When I installed my backup camera in my E46 sedan (2000 model), I researched forum posts about hooking up the power, ground, and trigger wire for the backup camera. Most guys connect the power AND trigger wire to the blue/white backup light wire in the trunk (which could possibly cause a delay or latency issue with the camera video appearing on your screen), or they hook the 12v power wire to one of the license plate wires for power. The problem with using the license plate wire is that those only get 12v power when you have the car's lights turned on.

If the camera is connected to any full time 12v wire, the circuit in it will be a constant drain on the car battery. A small drain, but a drain nonetheless.

What you really need is to have the camera powered up ANY TIME the car is running (accessory power) or when the key is turned ON. The problem is that there don't seem to be any convenient 12v accessory power wires back there to connect to.

I was about to run an accessory wire to the dash of the car, but then I remembered that the rear glass radio antenna has a powered module in the rear C-pillar on the driver side of the car. It was fairly simple to run a hookup wire from the camera power wire through the trunk space, behind the rear seat back, and over to the driver side C-pillar, and tie it into the purple/white wire, as shown in this photo.

Ok, so there are tabs in the center of the block...and you must squeeze them inward..and push the block towards the back. See pics below. If you just use brute force to move this block those tabs will break.
