Hi,

Bought a 2003, 325i STEPTRONIC with a small problem.

This problem is only present in D mode, not in SD (weird). But when you are coming to a stop, and the car is downshifting speeds, right around 15 mph the car does a sudden jerk, like a strong downshift from 2nd to 1st. kinda like someone rear ended you, but not as hard. Even when you don't use the breaks, if you are just rolling to a stop, it does it.

What's wrong with it? it's every time and only on D mode.

i replaced brake pads, rotors and bushings recently so it's not that. Sounds to me like a transmission problem, but only from 2nd to 1st when almost at at a full stop.

Any help ? suggestions?

thank u in advanced

do i need to take it to a BMW dealer to have the software re-flashed?

I think my car is not under warranty, so would that be costly?

thanx

This is supposed to work on 04-current bmws but you could give this a try. I did it on my 01 and seemed to do something for me and it couldn't hurt you.

put you key in the ignition and turn it to the 2nd position ( farthest you can go without turning the car on)
Then push and hold the gas pedal down all the way for 30 sec. That is supposed to reset the transmission which learns your driving habits.

Start her up and take it for a drive.
Good luck, thought it was worth a try!

Ok Mine exactly had the same issue as above, I had the transmission flash done at the dealer which costed me around $250-300 (had some other maintenance done too). It definitely improved that jerk issue.

However I seem to be noticing it again now when its too cold out there in winter. Mine has 75k miles, so Im going to get the ATF changed soon.

The gas pedal to the floor trick resets the drive by wire (throttle) adaptation values, and it only lasts for a few miles, this is in no way related to your tranny. The reflash at the dealer costs typically 1 hour labor (108 dollars for me). There is a TSB about rough 2 to 1 downshifts on early steptronics (according to my dealer) and they said that a software upgrade fixes 99.9 percent of the problems. Dont waste your time with the key2 throttle down trick.

Garabatoss,
there is a software upgrade for your transmission concerning "harsh shifting" to a stop. It cost me $240 at the dealership. My car is 2003xi

Hi everybody.

I have a E46 330iA from 2002 with the same steptronic problem. I have changed the transmission oil and filter but the jerk remain.
The next step is a software upgrade/flash for the gearbox and then I will see.

regards
