So I got a flat on my way to school this morning. This seemingly inopportune incident affords me the opportunity to purchase a new set of wheels/ tires, as my current set up (19" m6 reps/ General Exclaim) is not very auto-x friendly (went to my first one a few weeks ago).

I'm interested in the d-force ltw5 in matte black (tiag exterior), which only comes in 17x8.5. Will I notice a significant improvement in performance if I choose 17x9? I am pretty settled on matte black as I am working on my silver/black theme, but I would be more satisfied with a better (wider) possible tire (dunlop z1 ss, 245/40).

I'm hoping to get my order in at TMS this afternoon, so I appreciate speedy advice.

You'll definitely feel a night and day different moving from a 18" wheel to a 17" wheel. If you plan on keeping a simple square setup, 17x8.5 +35-40 all around with 235-245 works well for an AutoX setup. Or if you would like to go a bit more aggressive, 17x9.0 all around with 255's. :D

and if i choose 17x9, then in what color? silver or anthracite? haha what a tough decision...wish they had 17x9 in matte black too

also, could you clarify what you mean by "aggressive?" 255 vs 240?

here's a brief list of my choices:

A. 17x8.5, 245/40, matte black
B. 17x8.5, 255/40, matte black
C. 17x9.0, 245/40, silver
D. 17x9.0, 245/40, anthracite
E. 17x9.0, 255/40, silver
F. 17x9.0, 255/40, anthracite

gracias

is the difference between 17x8.5 and 17x9 noticeable? if so, under what driving conditions? at the apex of a sharp turn? acceleration? a decrease in stopping distance?
It really depends on what width tire you plan on using with each width wheel. A 255 tire would work its best if mounted on a 9" wide wheel due to the wider contact patch, resulting in a better handling and more stable car.
