I was just about to place an order for the Dunlop M3 Wintersports to go on a set of the 18" OEM rims in the OEM dimensions (225/45-18 and 255/40-18), which appears to me to be what Tirerack recommends on their website.

Would that not be a good setup?

My expected driving conditions are not much snow, but more ice and cold surfaces, so it would seem that the wider footprint would not be as much of an issue. Would 225/45-18's be better all around on the OEM wheels? Certainly would save a few dollars...

I would DEFINITELY put the 225/45 all around. In snowy/icey conditions it's much better to have a thinner tire than a wide tire.

The wider tire would mean more contact with the ice/snow which would mean more chances of skidding and less grip.
