The first number is the overall width of the tire in millimeters. So a 255 is 10mm wider than a 245 (for reference, 1 in. = 25.4 mm). The second number is the "aspect ratio". It is the ratio of the sidewall height to the overall width. So a 245/35 has a sidewall that is 35% x 245 mm tall. A 255/30 has a sidewall that's 30% x 255 mm tall. The third number is the size rim it fits on. You ought to get a tire that's as close as possible to your oem tire diameter, which is probably close to 24.88". Discount Tire Co.'s website has a tire calculator where you can enter the tire size and it will calculate the dimensions for you.

Secondly, to help make sure you won't have rubbing issues, divide the tire width (245 or 255, etc) by 2 and subtract the offset of your wheels. If the number you get is higher than 82.5, you will probably have problems. BMW's factory setups keep that number at or below 77.5.
