My steering wheel leather is pretty much worn smooth, but clean. But, when I clean or condition it, it like turns into glue...the leather gets gummy and sticky, to the point where it's freaking me out a little. I've recently cleaned it with a Magic Eraser, which worked like a miracle for cleaning but seemed to make the tackiness worse, although it was almost as bad before. Heaven forbid I condition the leather! Then it's almost unsafe how sticky it is. Any way I can improve this somehow? Barring covering it (...so tacky :thanks:) or rewrapping it. Not there yet. Thanks y'all!!

Good question! Magic Eraser last time since I hadn't cleaned it in like a year...but usually Armor All Multi-Purpose Interior Cleaner (not the godawful protectant, don't worry) along with the rest of the interior. When I first got the car in 2014 I did a quick wipedown and conditioned it, and even then it got real sticky.

Use the magic eraser VERY rarely! it's lightly sanding off a layer and heavily degreasing so the oils get stripped off the leather and wears it down super quick. Water and a microfiber is the safest, maybe dilute some leather cleaner and that's all. Putting leather conditioner on will just make it worse, i've been through all this haha

I used to work as a detailer and usually a sticky wheel was a sign that there was a build up of crud? (for lack of a better word) on the wheel still. It can be very hard to clean off but with persistence and some elbow grease it usually will come off. This is by no way saying you have a dirty car. Over time the oils in you hands along with dead skin (gross) build up on the wheel. I cant remember the product we used to use but it was a leather safe degreaser. Even using this it was hard to remove it. When you clean it lightly or rough it up it becomes sticky. You may notice this on humid days too. Another example of this is if you have ever seen a wood stair railing that looks discolored and black. Same stuff on there. Oil and dead skin from hands. The two BMW's I have owned haven't had the leather wear off on them so I cant say weather or not its gets sticky as it wears. Usually worn leather will also be discolored. If there isn't any major discoloring my guess is that there's just a buildup on your wheel. Sorry for the long winded explanation but hopefully this helps :)

I do a bit of detailing in Las Vegas and the best solution for me was to use some of meguiars D14901. It can be had for 28.99 on amazon for a full gallon. Dilute it 50/50 with water and your set safe for the whole interior(except glass which the best is 50/50 water and alcohol. On the sticky parts let it settle and lightly wipe away all excess product. Strong degreasers have a high ph level that only makes stuff more sticky.
