Sun roof shade

1913 Views 10 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  blau3guy
One or two of the clips busted some how on my sun roof shade. Has any one else had this problem. I am wondering if this is easy to replace or If I have to have my dealer install a new one. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
ISM

Can I ask you why you use it? I've had moonroofs on my last 3 cars and I opened the shade the day I picked up the car and they never moved. Since the roof is tinted I don't see the point of the shade. I've never had any problem with glare.
yes, i had this problem too. I don't believe it's easy to replace and the dealer (I'm still under warranty) told me that this is a very common problem with E46's

to find more info.

This is common. Happened on my '00 328i

just dealing with it for now.
Yeah - it's a $1000 fix!

If they are unable to "reset" the clips it requires a whole new frame ($500) plus labor ($500).

It's just another one of those poor designs that we have to put up with. As dick said - just leave it open - realize that if it comes loose it may get wedge in such a way that the moonroof won't close properly - which necessitates a removal of the headliner.
Yep must be a common problem. I had the same prob. with my 99 328i. The said they had to replace the entire sunroof casset. This required an entire day, and if not for the warranty, it would have been expensive. They did tell me that this a fairly common problem. So don't worry you are not alone. Hope your warranty is still valid.

Well, tinted or not, if you live in FL, a black leather interior gets hot as sh%^ in the summer if you leave it open. I don't touch it anymore though. I've had to have the whole thing replace 2x in less than 3 years. Stupid design!
i have had mine since i bought my ride open it every time i smoke in the car.(wich is twice a day, going to work, traffic) and evrybody ahs ahd a problem with theirs except mine.) i think its a matter of how you open it and how bhard you close it I THINK
You need to replace the broken clips. They are about $15 each from the dealer. Lift the sunroof into the "vent" position, take out the six hex screws. Now lift the sunroof out of the top of the car. This will allow you to get down to the shade. Remove the shade, replace the clips and put everything back together.

While everything is pulled apart, try to play with it to understand what went wrong. With mine, the clips were accidently traveling under the arm that the sunroof uses when opening the roof. Then it would get off track and cause my problems. I added plastic pieces to the clips to make the clips thicker. This took care of my problem. The shade is a bit more difficult to move, but that's fine since I don't manually move it all that often.

I put a write-up on here at one time. Good luck.

If you close it the leather on the car doesnt get faded, and it provides an extra layer of protection against thieves breaking in through the moonroof (happened to me, but the guy couldnt get into the car because the shade was closed):banghead:
I had this exact problem under warranty -- part nos. 54-13-8-246-027 (sliding piece left) and 54-13-8-246-025 (sliding piece right) replaced....
