Any one change the SUCKING JET PUMP by DIY (Parts set number 4), is easy to change?

Yes out of fuel and the grage show 1/4 at the highway, too bad

Same problem here, do we need to change the fuel filter as wel?
you check the hidden function 6.0 first, see the fuel can run from left to right tank or not. :hi:

right tank is empty? the fuel pump is at the right, i guess the "sucking jet pump" is fault in your case. it is becoz the fuel cannot move from left to rigth tank.

I had changed the fuel filter DIY spend US$32.5, as the result the problem could not be solve, the total tank is around 24 lites and the OBD shown 078164 & no droop down to 000, that means the fuel cannot though the sucking jet pump move from left to right. the next i will change the sucking jet pump, i had quoted US$75 from HK BMW parts shop. may be action on tomorrow or weekend.

1. Drive the fuel low or pump it out (or just work with the tank full and wash all the fuel off your hands later).

2. Disconnect battery. Remove the left and right access panels under rear seat.

3. Remove fuel pump (right side).

4. Remove fuel sender (left side) and pull the sucking pump off it.

5. Reach into right side and pull other end of sucking pump hose out from bottom of tank; fish the whole thing out through the left side.

look for the the black plastic pipe, and pull it from the other (Opposite) end.
Basically the jet pump connects the left to the right side. The one end has a connector, and the other end is just an open pipe - so pull from the connector end.

One thing I noticed, make sure you put the pipe back in the same position you found it, dont want it to be floating around.

While you at it, try cleaning out the contacts for both fuel level sensors. I used some alcohol and a q-tip to clean. It gets quite dirty over the years.

I replaced mines recently and so not sure yet if my DIY is workiong or now, will probably know will let the fuel run down abit by run the fuel under 5 liters - - need to keep some fuel in the trunk just incase. Dont want to be stranded in the middle of nowhere with no fuel.




b4 replace left level 8 liters and going to 11 liters final.

see replaced the new sucking jet pump droop to 2 liters than less than 1 liters, that mean this is working with the sucking jet pump

Interested in your outcome, I am doing this as soon as I run my fuel down. You probably also need to reset the cluster via menu item 21, although disconnecting the battery might do this.
I also bought the M3 fuel baffle (part 7 top post) and will install this below the fuel pump see http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=687864

can you tell me what exactly that M3 fuel baffle does?

The fuel baffle holds about 500ml of gas - it is a container under the fuel pump. The idea is that when you corner or go uphill, the car is not fuel starved by the gas sloshing around the tank.
Keeping the fuel in the baffle also allows you to save weight during track days by keeping smaller volumes of fuel in the tank. You will not get fuel starved with the baffle holding fuel and the sucking pump pushing its flow from the left node directly to the baffle.

Steps to correct the problem of running out of fuel while the indicator shows 1/8 of a tank:
1. Removed the left and right fuel senders under rear seat. The tank was run down to 10% remaining fuel so there was little spillage.
Have a large rag when the first clamp is cut off.



Cleaned the contacts as well as the volume scale with electrical contact cleaner.
Slide the circuit board to remove any gap between the stop and the circuit board.
Also cleaned other points on contact such as under the contacts.



2. Pulling out the drivers side sender requires that you pull the sucking jet pump off.
This is done by pushing the tab in and pulling the hose away.



3. Place the M3 fuel baffle into the existing tray.



The M3 baffle has several benefits
1/ a more solid connection point
2/ created a 500ml reservoir for fuel that will not slosh away from the fuel pump when cornering.
3/ creates even more suction to pull fuel to the fuel pump from the left node.

This is the dry fit of the sucking jet pump:



4. Push the sucking jet pump over the mid tank bulge and attach to the baffle.
Then attach the tube and tab to the driver side sending unit. I used my new seal on the pump side.
5. Check that both seals are in place. Push the tab on the top of the sending into the tab in the seal. Use the screwdriver and hammer to tighten the metal collar. Use the new clamps on the hoses and reattach the electrical connections.

Success! Prior to the cleaning my senders were showing 11.5 liters in the tank (using menu 19 test 6). Immediately after restarting my car after this maintenance, the senders began showing the correct amount 7 liters with no menu 21 reset required:thumbsup:

Engine goin off at 1/4 of petrol.

Hello guys... I had this problem of engine goin off as if ther was no petrol.
U know wat I did..... after reading all ur comments I decided check wat was goin on.
I removed the the fuel pump only to find it was hot. My assumption was the pump was dying as it stopped pumpin fuel if its empty on the drivers side. Petrol was acting as a cooling system to the fuel pump as it functioned well if the pump is dipped in the petrol. Once petrol goes down, pump overheat and fails.
After changin the pump everything went well n now the gauge can even go to empty.
No need to change the jet pump. Thank u.

gas tank issues

If you are having any fuel tank, fuel pump related issues, I strongly recommend replacing the fuel filter. Unless your sucking jet pump assembly is cracked, clogged, or not connected properly, you should not have to mess with it. It is basically a tube that connects both sides of the tank. I have found through many repairs, toils, and cares that the fuel filter is the culprit. If the fuel filter is clogged, it will not allow sufficient fuel pressure to flow through the gas lines. The BMW fuel suction pump, as well as all the other pumps, must have sufficient fuel pressure or they will not operate correctly. When the tank gets below 1/8, or in my 2003 325 i at about 56 miles dte, fuel is drawn from the drivers side tank to the main tank. If there is insufficient pressure, this will not happen correctly, or at all, and the car will sputter or stall. Once I replaced the fuel filter, my mpg increased, as well as the power and acceleration. Do yourself a favor and spend the extra 30 to 50 dollars or so and replace the fuel filter. You will not regret it!

old thread,hope someone can help!
my e46 is doing the 1/4 out of gas thing!
found that the left side has more gas than the right side,thats why stalls at 1/4 tank.

new vdo fuel pump,new bosch pressure regulator,left side readings confirmed 000 on low and 024 on full (cluster readings)
still going out of gas at 1/4 tank!
i can pass air back and fort trough jet pump so pipe is not clogged,all pipes are connected and the one going to the right side is hooked up to the pump side basket.
if i leave the car idling for some minutes i can see the left side getting more gas and the right side going lower like 12 liters in the left and 5 liters on the right and going down,apparently the pump is doing the work to supply the engine but when returning is staying on the left side and not going back to the right side.

no codes no problems running!

any help?
