So,

my cylinder 5 has stripped out the threads on the head itself. I paid a friend of mine to try and use a thread repair kit; however, he didn't do the job properly and the thread insert could never stay in.

Is there anything I can do at this point ?

I've been told my only options are to:
1) replace cylinder head
2) replace engine

is there anything else ?

You could replace car

You need to have a shop install a ,,Timesert brand insert. Once this insert is in place, you won't have the problem again.
