elaborate.
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world's largest and highest-energy particle accelerator intended to collide opposing particle beams of either protons at an energy of 7 TeV per particle or lead nuclei at an energy of 574 TeV per nucleus. It lies in a tunnel 27 kilometres (17 mi) in circumference, as much as 175 metres (570 ft) beneath the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva, Switzerland. (Wikipedia)

^ why, delete.

there is a special tool to remove those springs. It's still a pain in the ass even with it.

why do you think there is a filter and the magnet in the pan. What did the bands and servo's look like?

the clutches and pressure plates look to be fine
bands and servos? wut

Very nice. Maybe I missed this, but why waste the tranny though?
Nothing is a waste. But the tranny was fubar for reasons unknown. I knew the reverse solenoid was bad but I'll take it apart again and look at everything more closely later. Maybe then I'll figure it out.

wow beautiful. In the pictures I noticed you spun the parts. Was it really that easy to spin?
yep, they would have spun for hours if we didnt stop them. They were literally frictionless, well almost.
I know what it is. How does an automatic transmission "remind" you of a 27km long tunnel?
Aleks, this:

now be done with this ot crap. :p
Nice neil! Though you probably should have reassembled it correctly and sold it for a few hundred bucks, lol.

Ready for the bombshell? The GM one is the good one. The E46 autos are made by two different companies, ZF and GM. The early ZF ones are the ones with problems.
I heard later cars like 330's came with the GM. The other day I discovered my 330 has a ZF.
i think im going to show this to my physics professor haha. he and i just had a conversation of how auto transmissions work.
Well done, I KNEW there was a reason I have MANUAL transmissions!

Always fun taking stuff apart when you really do not have to get it back together correctly. Takes all the pressure off and leads to fun.
Now that you've seen it inside...What looks like the possible area(s), parts of the tranny that can be harmed by changing fluid? (the theory that gunk dislodges and cloggs something else). Or is it the complexity of the whole thing that makes you decide against the fluid change?

Good job!
nice shots with the camera always fun to take something apart!
my response.

if we can build millions of those i don't see how solving our energy problems could be an issue! throw enough engineers at something and you get some amazing things!

I wish Miles, it was just something I didnt feel like messing with at the time. Those gears were sharp as fack, my hands hurt so bad.

I wouldnt mess with it period. There is just no point, at least up until 150k miles at minimum. That's just my opinion from what I've observed here.

crappy camera ;)
haha, I really hope you guys appreciate the quality of the photos. Under normal circumstances I would have just grabbed my point and shoot. I felt that the d60 would better serve you guys :luv:
wow . Nice work, and that gear system
Those clutch packs look like they were in really good shape for the mileage. Did you drive aggressively with it?
Wow im speechless that is by far one of the coolest things ive seen on here. well worth the 5 min to load all the pics. Thanks for taking your time to do this.
HOLY NEIL. You are indeed a true fanatic..I bow to you
Nice pictures, although I'm not sure about the 'don't bother changing your oil' theory. Granted, the internal parts look good, however, you still have a problem (?) yet don't know what has caused it. For all you know it may be wear or a blockage due to old oil?

I'm not saying your wrong about the oil thing, but it might be a little early to declare it's a waste of time...

I, personally, would always recommend you change the transmission oil as it does degrade over time, just like the oil in your diff. After all, you're not going to break anything by putting fresh oil in it (although already broken things may be more visible).

Neil, truly amazing. When you said "should I do it?", I chimed in with "yeah, ASAP" and you have! You and your friend deserve an award! Cool pics too
good job. You R pro. it seems complecated. but why didnt you sell and change it to manual? which is better.
Nice photos but what's the point? You still don't know why it malfunctioned do you? How can you eliminate dirty fluid as a cause? I changed my fluid two months ago and the tranny shifts fine. Will do so every 50k as long as I have my car.
